| Bucks Look To Secure Playoff Spot Against Knicks At MSG |
Milwaukee has improved their performance at home as the year has progressed, but has remained a serious underachiever on the road. The Bucks’ biggest issue is scoring offense—they’re dead last in the NBA in this category scoring only 91.5 PPG. That’s a full 1.5 points less than the #29 scoring offense of the Charlotte Bobcats. On the other hand, the Bucks are very good on the defensive end—they currently rank #3 in team defense allowing only 92.6 PPG. That’s better than Orlando and New Orleans and trails only Boston and Chicago. Of course no matter how good a team plays defensively if they allow more points than they score it just doesn’t work out. The Knicks have been a very enigmatic team. They’re capable of looking like a legitimate at times—like in their road victory at Miami in late February—and very mediocre on other nights capable of losing to teams like Cleveland and Detroit. Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire are still producing points in buckets averaging more than 50 PPG combined, but the Knicks’ glaring weakness has been the diametric opposite of the Bucks’—they play shabby defense. When he was acquired from Denver, Anthony suggested that he wanted to help improve the team’s defensive intensity. That really hasn’t happened—the Knicks are currently the #28 scoring defense in the NBA allowing more points than Cleveland, Phoenix and Toronto. Since the Anthony deal the Knicks have been a team that plays well against elite level opposition but often ‘plays down’ to less inspiring opponents. That could very well be the case here against a team that will provide no intrinsic motivation or big name stars to get the Knicks’ competitive juices flowing. On the other hand, the Bucks have a potential lookahead to a big home game against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night. In the classic contrast between a good offense and strong defense, history has typically favored the defense. That’s how we see the game as well—New York can score points in buckets and Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire are a couple of the most exciting offensive players in the NBA but we like the idea of taking points with the Bucks’ top three defense. Their sorry performance on the road concerns us, but it also makes them something of a contrarian play in this spot. Take the Bucks to pull an outright upset in a game that goes UNDER the total.

The New York Knicks generated a lot of excitement when they acquired Carmelo Anthony from Denver but they haven’t quite lived up to the hype. They’ll try to get a win against a NBA Eastern Conference opponent on Friday when they host the Milwaukee Bucks at Madison Square Garden. Milwaukee was one of the surprise teams of last season but they haven’t been anywhere near as good this year. They’re also a much better team at home than on the road where they’ve posted a woeful 9-24 SU record. The Bucks are trying to move past Indiana for the 8th and final playoff spot in the conference and currently trail the Pacers by two games.
