Hawks End NBA Regular Season Against Bobcats In Charlotte
Hawks End NBA Regular Season Against Bobcats In CharlotteThe Atlanta Hawks are playoff bound, though they’re not exactly entering the NBA’s postseason with a ton of momentum having lost 6 of their last 10 games. They’ll try to put a victory in the books as they head north to the ‘Queen City’ of Charlotte, North Carolina to take on the Bobcats. Despite a tumultuous season that included a coaching change and a number of personnel moves, the Bobcats will finish in 9th or 10th place which is fairly respectable given the circumstances. The team is trying to cut payroll under new owner Michael Jordan and will have a lot of hard personnel decision to make in the off season.

If you’ve watched the NBA at all this year you already know the deal with Atlanta—they’re as talented as any team in the league and on a given night can complete with the NBA’s elite. They’re also the biggest collection of ‘head cases’ that you’ll find on any team—and particularly any team that’s going to the playoffs. The Hawks often show up without focus or intensity and frankly look like they don’t care if they win or lose on any given night. That can be frustrating for a team’s fans during the regular season but in the postseason it can be particularly costly.

The good news for Atlanta in this matchup is that the Bobcats have suffered a number of injuries lately that have further compromised their already erratic offense. Stephen Jackson is the catalyst of the team on both ends of the floor and he’s been hampered by a nagging hamstring issue. With Jackson hurting the Bobcats aren’t scoring—Charlotte is ranked #29 in the league in scoring offense and have scored more than 100 points only three times in their last 21 games. They’re not a bad team defensively, but no matter how many points you hold opponents to if that number is more than the points you score, you lose.

As always with Atlanta, motivation is a concern. They’re locked in to the #5 playoff spot regardless of what happens from here on out so a win won’t help them and a loss won’t hurt them. Having said that, there’s no guarantee that Charlotte will ‘come to play’ in their remaining regular season games. In theory, the distinction between finishing 9th and 10th should provide motivation but since they won’t be going to the playoffs in any case that’s hard to count on.

Ultimately, we’ll go with the better team with more scoring options. If Charlotte doesn’t play Atlanta tough on defense, the Hawks will outscore the Bobcats with ease. Even if they do play solid defensively, they just don’t have the offensive weapons to match Atlanta’s wide variety of scoring options. We’ll look for a win and cover for Atlanta here.
