Wizards, Cavs Wind Up a Long NBA Season
Wizards, Cavs Wind Up a Long NBA SeasonThis may be the least eagerly anticipated game of the final night of NBA regular season action, but it could provide a solid wagering opportunity. The Washington Wizards and Cleveland Cavaliers have been ‘playing out the string’ since before New Years’. The Cavs broke a record for consecutive losses during the campaign, and the Wizards are going to finish with one of the worst road records in NBA history. The only highlight for either team has been the overall excellent play of Washington rookie John Wall who has been every bit as good as advertised.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are currently neck and neck with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the worst record in the NBA, and this game could decide whether they ‘earn’ this ignominious distinction. The Wolves have been playing much worse than Cleveland down the stretch and entered the week on a 10 game losing streak while the Cavs were a far better (relatively speaking at least) 4-6 in their last 10 games. The Cavs have bit hit from all sides this season—first it was the defection of LeBron James to the Miami Heat, followed by a slew of injuries to essentially every proven veteran on the roster. Despite this, the Cavs have continued to play hard for head coach Byron Scott even when they just didn’t have the personnel to compete.

Washington finally put the huge mistake in judgment they made by signing Gilbert Arenas to a long term deal behind them. Unfortunately, that was only one of many problems facing this trainwreck of a franchise. They’ve got a few things working in their favor—last year’s #1 draft pick John Wall is as good as advertised, if not better. He’s just 20 years old so it’ll take a couple of years for him to mature into a team leader on and off the floor but he’s got all of the talent and then some. Andray Blatche is a highly underrated power forward and JeVale McGee is becoming a solid NBA center. That’s a nice nucleus to build around but at this point the Wizards have very little to compliment these players.

We typically favor the Cavs in matchups of ‘bad vs. bad’ since as we noted above their effort has been fairly good all season long and Byron Scott is a solid NBA coach. In this spot, however, it’s a bad tactical matchup for them. These two teams played just a couple of weeks ago and the Wizards’ frontline absolutely demolished the Cavs—Andray Blatche and JeVale McGee combined for 61 points and 27 rebounds against Cleveland’s undersized frontline.

Quick revenge spots are often good opportunities to ‘play on’ the team that lost the first time around. In this case, however, the two weeks isn’t going to change the fundamental matchup problems that Cleveland has against Washington. It’s not like the Cavs players have gotten bigger or stronger since the last game. For that reason, we’ll look for the Wizards to pick up a rare road win against the Cavaliers.
