| The LA Lakers Start the Run for a title against the New Orleans Hornets |
The Hornets are entering the playoffs as the seventh seed in the Western Conference, which has them facing a difficult opening-round opponent as they try and regroup from a regular season-ending 121-89 loss at Dallas on Wednesday. The loss didn't not drop the Hornets (46-36) to the eighth spot because later in the evening the Grizzlies lost at the Clippers, leaving Memphis and New Orleans with the same record. The Hornets won the tiebreaker based on a better division record. That leaves the Hornets matched against the Lakers, who swept the four-game season series and won by an average of 10.8 points per game. Though the Lakers appear to be the worst match-up for the Hornets, the alternative was to play the Mavericks. Even though New Orleans split the season series with Dallas, the outcome of Wednesday's game -- the Hornets' most-lopsided loss of the season -- didn't suggest they were ready to compete with the Mavericks. In fact, it's questionable whether the Hornets appear ready to compete with any playoff team after losing their last three games by an average of 22 points. Coach Monty Williams has to decide the best way to handle his rotation. Does he go small or does he hope to get better production from his reserve big men than he has gotten during the regular season? His most reliable reserves have been guards Willie Green and Jarrett Jack, and the Hornets have had success playing both of them along with Chris Paul against smaller lineups. This will stum the Lakers and be worth a watch this weekend. The LA Lakers played their best basketball after the All-star break and despite a losing streak to end the season; the Lakers are the team to beat. The New Orleans Hornets will try to change that up when the two teams meet.
