| The Orlando magic Look To Cage the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA playoffs |
It's time to find out if the regular season has any bearing on the playoffs. If it does, the Magic might be in for a rude awakening. The Magic (52-30) will open the playoffs Saturday at home against the Atlanta Hawks, who beat the Magic in three of their four meetings during the season. The Magic, who earned the No. 4 seed to face the No. 5 Hawks, swept the Hawks in the second round of the playoffs last season. Neither team is as good as they were a year ago when the Magic and Hawks were seeded second and third, respectively. This was the fifth consecutive year the Magic have made the playoffs and the fourth consecutive year -- all under Stan Van Gundy -- they have won at least 50 games. Even though the Hawks have much the same team as a year ago, they are playing considerably different. They are expected to go with a big lineup that includes Jason Collins at center, which didn't happen last year. They also have a better defensive point guard in Kirk Hinrich. The Magic should be well rested for the playoff games because Game 2 isn't until Tuesday and Game 3 not until Friday, giving them plenty of rest. For years, Dwight Howard was told to become more serious and drop his goofy, trying-to-be-funny ways. And he listened, getting more serious about his game. But he has promised now that some of the silliness that once made him so likeable, will return. "I just felt like … why am I trying not to smile, or do what I did in previous seasons?" he said. "Why am I doing this to myself? I think people enjoy the way I play because of the things I do on the court. I do like to smile. I just can't allow anything to keep me away from that." Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said he doesn't expect Dwight Howard to have any technical foul trouble in the playoffs, even though he led the league with 18 technicals—and two one-game suspensions—during the regular season. If he can avoid foul trouble, the Magic will clip the Hawks in game one.
