The Portland Trail Blazers and the Dallas Mavericks meet in a crucial game one
The Portland Trail Blazers and the Dallas Mavericks meet in a crucial game one The Dallas Mavericks seem vulnerable as the playoff start and a game against the Portland Trail Blazers could provide an early exit for the Mavericks if they are not ready.

The Trail Blazers got some rest and the first-round playoff matchup they desired. Portland fell 110-86 to Golden State in Wednesday night's regular-season windup at Oracle Arena. Coach Nate McMillan chose to sit out five of his top eight players -- starters LaMarcus Aldridge, Gerald Wallace and Marcus Camby and key reserves Nicolas Batum and Brandon Roy.

All will be well-rested when the Blazers (48-34) begin the playoffs Saturday at Dallas. Portland, the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference, split four games with the third-seeded Mavericks this season, but won the last two. The Blazers, who won eight of their final 12 games, feel good about the way they match up with the Mavs, who have had their struggles over the final month of the regular season.

Portland's first-round matchup went down to the final seconds—and beyond. The Blazers which had already clinched the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference, went into Wednesday not knowing whether the Lakers, Dallas or Oklahoma City would be their opponent.

After an Oklahoma City loss and Dallas win earlier in the day, the Lakers needed to win at Sacramento to tie up the No. 2 seed in the West. They blew a 20-point fourth-quarter lead and fell behind the Kings by three points with nine seconds to go. Kobe Bryant's three-pointer with six seconds left forced overtime, though, and the Lakers escaped with a 116-108 victory in the extra session.

That dropped Dallas into the third seed and made the Mavericks Portland's first-round opponent, with the first two games of the best-of-seven series at Dallas Saturday and Tuesday. The teams split their four regular-season meetings, but the Blazers won the last two times, both at the Rose Garden. This matchup works well with the Blazers and they win game one.
