Magic Hope To Solve Hawks’ Puzzle in Game 2
Magic Hope To Solve Hawks’ Puzzle in Game 2The Atlanta Hawks were the NBA’s most dysfunctional team during the regular season, and their erratic behavior has continued into the postseason—but in a good way. In Saturday’s opening game of their Eastern Conference series with the Orlando Magic the Hawks got balanced scoring throughout their lineup to overcome 46 points and 19 rebounds by Dwight Howard to upset the Magic 103-93. It was a marked reversal of fortune from last season’s playoff round between Atlanta and Orlando when the Magic eliminated the Hawks in the most lopsided sweep in NBA history. Orlando will try to even the series in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

The Hawks have enough talent to play with anyone in the league but they seldom do. To evoke a film reference, they’re like Tim Robbins' character in 'Bull Durham'--Nuke LaLoosh--before Kevin Costner took him under his wing. They've got the NBA version of 'a million dollar arm and a fifty cent head'. They lost six straight games to close out the regular season going 1-5 ATS. For much of the season they looked unfocused at best, like they completely didn’t care if they won or lost at worst.

Curiously, they gave the Magic all kinds of trouble this season making the first game upset a little less shocking. Atlanta won 3 of the 4 meetings and covered all four but that performance isn't quite as impressive as it sounds. Three of the games took place before the end of 2010 when the Hawks were playing relatively well and the Magic weren't. The final game was in late March when Orlando's playoff seeding was already set and Atlanta was trying to hold on to theirs. On paper, it's a horrible matchup for Atlanta since they have no answer for Dwight Howard in the middle. That was evident in Howard’s opening game performance. Not many teams can defend Howard and he should have another huge game, but , but the rest of the Orlando roster need to pick up their game as well.

The Hawks are now 4-1 SU/5-0 ATS against Atlanta this year, but we expect that to change in Game 2. Hopefully Stan Van Gundy will pull out the video of last season’s dominating playoff performance since the template for victory is already set and the team just needs to execute. We expect the Magic to win by double digits over a disinterested Hawks team and don't expect to see a price this low for Game 2. Despite their struggles this season and the game 1 loss Orlando is 6-3 SU/5-4 ATS against Atlanta at home since 2008 and we look for the Magic to even the series here.
