| Blazers Look To Strike Back Against Mavs |
If there’s any solace for the Blazers in the loss it is that they are definitely able to compete with the Mavericks. Portland led by six midway through the final quarter before Nowitzki went on his tear to bail out his team. From a tactical standpoint, the Blazers don’t need to do much differently than they did in Game 1—with the exception of defending Nowitzki better late. In theory, this is a difficult matchup for the Mavericks since they’re not a particularly ‘tough’ team and could be vulnerable to the athleticism of the Blazers. Portland has a lot of ‘big bodies’ they can throw at Nowitzki and we expect coach Nate McMillan to use all of the fouls at his disposal to ‘rough up’ Dallas’ star. The Blazers could see the problem take care of itself as Nowitzki is infamously ‘streaky’ and could ‘disappear’ in Game 2 as he’s done in playoff contests in the past. Dallas hasn’t been a very good team at American Airlines Arena over the past few years, at least against the spread. The Mavs are 20-20 ATS on their home floor this season but since 2008 they’re a brutal 53-74 ATS at home. They’ve also not been able to maintain their intensity when leading in a playoff series—since 2008 Dallas is just 2-3 SU/ATS when leading in a playoff series. We’ve been a fan of this Portland team all year since they may exert the most consistent effort of any team in the NBA. You don’t see them ‘quit’ or ‘phone in’ performances and that is the type of team we like to bet as an underdog. As noted above, they lost the first game due to a one man effort from Nowitzki and not because of a tactical matchup issue or inability to compete with the Mavericks. We look for a solid Portland effort in Game 2 with a few adjustments in how they defend Nowitzki and expect a Blazers outright win in a game that stays UNDER the total.

The Portland Trailblazers gave the Dallas Mavericks a tough battle in Game 1 of their NBA Western Conference series, but a timely individual effort from Dirk Nowitzki salvaged the victory for the home team. Nowitzki scored 18 of his 28 points in the 4th quarter to turn back the challenge of the plucky Blazers and give his team a Game 1 win. Portland will try to even the series on Tuesday night as they face the Mavericks once again in Game 2 back at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas.
