Heat Try To Eliminate Sixers at Home
Heat Try To Eliminate Sixers at HomeThe Miami Heat won’t sweep their opening round NBA Eastern Conference series against the Philadelphia 76ers but they are hoping to wrap things up in five games as the teams meet on Wednesday night at the American Airlines Arena. The Heat had been well in control throughout the first three games, though the feisty Sixers did manage to win Game 4 at home and stave off elimination. The victory was far from easy for Philadelphia—the Sixers trailed by six with less than two minutes to play before going on a 10-0 run to finish the game and steal the win.

Sixers’ coach Doug Collins waxed philosophic after the dramatic triumph:

"If you have faith, you have hope. And if you have hope, you have life.”

While Miami’s Erik Spolestra said his team was unable to close out an opponent at the worst possible time:

"We've proven all year long that we were able to close those types of games out. We were not able to tonight."

Credit to Philadelphia for their resilience and fight, but the Game 4 victory doesn’t change things for them. The Heat have had little trouble with Philadelphia so far in this series—until the Game 4 victory they’d covered in two of their three wins. The Sixers did get the ‘backdoor’ cover in Game 1, but the Heat had little trouble in winning by 9 as -11 favorites.

We’ve used the Sixers a lot this year and especially at home. Philadelphia was 26-15 SU at the Wells Fargo Center this year and demonstrated that they could contend with any team in the league on their home floor. Away from home, it was a different situation entirely—they were competitive, but that didn’t translate into wins going 15-26 SU on the road. Miami was vulnerable at various points on their home floor, but even with these well publicized slumps the Heat produced a solid 30-11 SU record at home.

We expect Miami to win the game and advance to the next round, but we don’t expect Philadelphia to ‘roll over’. The Heat have had the vibe of a team ‘looking ahead’ at various points during the first round and while they may have the talent to get away with it against the Sixers it makes them impossible to back as a pointspread play at this price. Instead, we’ll take the points with a hard working, well coached and fundamentally sound Philadelphia side.
