| Hawks Try To Elminate Magic |
Even with Orlando’s Game 5 win, they’re still in a deep hole at least if history is any indication. Only eight teams in NBA history have overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a best of 7 series, and if the Magic can survive Game 5 in Atlanta they’ll host the decisive final game back home in Orlando. On Tuesday night they Magic finally got a big boost from their backcourt, with Jason Richardson and J.J. Redick carrying most of the scoring load. Dwight Howard finished with only 8 points and 8 rebounds—he battled foul trouble in the first half but was able to get some rest in the second half as Orlando’s lead stayed around thirty points. Heading into this series the conventional wisdom was that Orlando would make short work of Atlanta due to their huge matchup advantage in the paint. That projection was correct, as Dwight Howard has dominated on both ends of the floor. There are really not many teams in the NBA that can give ‘Superman’ matchup problems, but Atlanta is especially undersized inside and Howard has had some huge games on both offense and defense. The problem for Orlando has been in the backcourt—the athleticism of the Hawks’ guards have given the Magic fits. The regular season series between the teams should have served as a warning for Orland—Atlanta was 3-1 SU/4-0 ATS this year. Including the playoffs, Atlanta is now 8-1 against the spread against Orlando this season. The Hawks were underachievers all throughout the regular season, but the Magic’s intensity was very inconsistent as well. For that reason we look for Atlanta’s guard play to once again be the difference as has been the case throughout the series. We expect a big game from Dwight Howard, but look for the Hawks to win Game 6 at home to eliminate the Magic.

The Atlanta Hawks are a tough team to figure out. After ‘phoning it in’ for most of the final month of the NBA regular season most observers considered their prospects for postseason success minimal. So far, however, it’s looked like they were just ‘pacing themselves’ during the 82 games that preceded the playoffs. The Hawks have given the favored Orlando Magic fits during their opening round Eastern Conference series and despite a Game 5 loss they’ll return home to Phillips Arena with a 3-2 advantage and another opportunity to clinch in Game 6 on Thursday night.
