| Hawks Look For Another Series Upset Against Bulls |
This type of playoff performance has become something of a trend for the Atlanta Hawks—they’ve become notorious for a bumbling, halfhearted regular season followed by a postseason run where they give higher seeded teams like Boston and Orlando fits. This season, in particular, the Hawks looked unfocused and disinterested for most of the campaign. In fact, we’re not convinced that their victory over Orlando wasn’t more of a function of a favorable matchup and not a case of them saving their intensity for the playoffs. They’ll need to bring their A-Game if they have any hope of slowing down the Chicago Bulls’ freight train. The Bulls have won 30 of their last 35 games dating back to the regular season and had one of the best team defenses in the NBA throughout the year. Chicago finished second in scoring defense to Boston by mere fractions of a point and are a particularly tough matchup for Atlanta since they’re younger and more athletic than the Celtics. There are some injury issues with the Bulls heading into the Hawks’ series—the most significant may or may not be an issue as Derek Rose looks OK following his sprained ankle scare in Game 4 of the series against the Pacers. Carlos Boozer is pulling one of his late season disappearing acts very familiar to Utah Jazz fans—his current ailment is ‘turf toe’ and not his balky hamstring that caused him to miss countless games while playing in Salt Lake City. The good news is that the Bulls don’t have the same reliance on’ C-Booz’ that the Jazz did and can play—and win—without him. We don’t see the Hawks posing much of a challenge to the Bulls in this series and expect Chicago to advance in five or six games at the most. We also think they’ll get off to a good start and take a victory here in Game 1. We do have a concern with laying the points with Chicago—as a ‘defense first’ team they’re not the type of squad that drops big margins on opponents. For that reason we’d be more inclined to take any points available with Atlanta in a game that we expect to go UNDER the total.
