The Dallas Mavericks and LA Lakers do battle in the second round of the NBA Playoffs
The Dallas Mavericks and LA Lakers do battle in the second round of the NBA PlayoffsThe Dallas Mavericks knew they would have to beat the LA Lakers if they wanted to go to the NBA Finals, they just did not realize it would be this quick.

The second-round series between the Lakers and Dallas starts with 7:30 p.m. PDT games at Staples Center on Monday and Tuesday. The following road games are May 6 and May 8.

The Mavericks can finally exhale, especially Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry, the only remaining players from the 2006 NBA Finals team that started a long chain of playoff failures.

After Thursday's Game 6 victory against the Portland Trail Blazers to win the series, 4-2, Nowitzki, Terry and the Mavs advanced to the second round for only the second time since the '06 failure.

For those two, it was like a weight removed from their shoulders. Even in Dallas, many fans simply expected them to bow out of the first round again even though they were again the higher seed. But, this time around, even after blowing a 23-point lead in Game 4 and nearly letting a 17-point bulge get away in Game 6, they persevered.

The Mavericks are optimistic that two-time All-Star Caron Butler will return for the second-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers. Game 1 of the best-of-seven series will be played Monday.

Butler underwent surgery to repair a torn knee ligament on January 1 and it was announced that his season was likely over while he recovered. But Butler set it in his mind that he could make a return for the playoffs and aggressively worked toward that goal.

He has yet to practice at full speed, but he's been taking part in shooting drills and is poised to make an appearance at some point in the series.

The Mavericks were blazing with Butler in the lineup, going 24-7 before he got hurt in December. He was averaging 15.0 points per game and providing his usual menacing influence on the defensive end.

The Mavericks will be tough to beat if Butler can come back, but in game one the Lakers will win big.
