The LA Lakers are in an early must win against the Dallas Mavericks
The LA Lakers are in an early must win against the Dallas MavericksThe Dallas Mavericks mounted a great come back to defeat the LA Lakers in game one.

Dirk Nowitzki's free throws with 19.5 seconds left gave Dallas the lead after the Mavericks trailed by 16 in the third quarter, and the Mavs held on to win the opener in the Western Conference semifinals. Nowitzki had 28 points and 14 rebounds. The Mavs overcame 36 points from Kobe Bryant, who missed a 3-pointer on the Lakers' last possession. Jason Terry scored 15 off the bench for Dallas.

Despite both franchises being regular playoff participants for the last decade or so, the Mavericks and Lakers haven't met in the postseason during the respective eras of Dirk Nowitzki and Kobe Bryant.

This is the first meeting by the Western Conference contenders since 1988. Dallas lost to Los Angeles in the West finals 23 years ago in seven games. The Lakers beat the Mavs in each of the teams' three playoff meetings during the 1980s, posting a 12-6 record, including a 10-0 mark at home.

The Mavs are just 3-6 in second-round series and haven't advanced past the second round since the 2006 run to the NBA Finals.

Offensive balance usually bodes well for Dallas. When four or more Mavs scored in double figures during the regular season, Dallas went 50-15. The record was 7-10 with three or fewer netting at least 10 points.

Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, Tyson Chandler, Shawn Marion and Peja Stojakovic all reached double figures in Game 1 for the Mavs. Naturally, Dallas won.

The Mavericks shot 49.4 percent from the field for the game, significantly better than the Lakers' 42.9 percent success rate. Dallas also hit nine of 20 3-point attempts, while Los Angeles was just five for 19 from long range, including Kobe Bryant's last-second miss.

The Lakers can’t afford to lose game two and will put forth an inspired effort.
