| The Atlanta Hawks Look To defend Home Court Against the Chicago Bulls |
After losing the series opener to Atlanta, the Bulls returned to the basics and delivered a victory over the Hawks in Game 2 on Wednesday at the United Center. The Bulls pestered Atlanta into shooting 33.8 percent from the field and built a 58-39 rebounding edge. Guard Derrick Rose produced 25 points, 10 assists and eight turnovers after accepting his MVP trophy from NBA commissioner David Stern before the game. Center Joakim Noah also played a vital role, finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds. The Bulls got off to a faster start than they did in Game 1 and never trailed in the final three quarters. Atlanta trimmed a 14-point deficit to six twice in the fourth quarter, but the Bulls used a 6-0 run to put the victory away. Guard Jeff Teague led the Hawks with 21 points. The difference between Games 1 and 2 against Atlanta was fairly obvious. The Bulls allowed 30 fewer points Wednesday than they did in the series opener. Guard Derrick Rose is the league's MVP, but the Bulls built the NBA's best record by relying on defense and rebounding. They dominated both categories in Game 2. In three regular-season meetings, the Hawks didn't score more than 83 points against the Bulls. In Game 1, they piled up 103. Thibodeau got the intensity he wanted to see at the start of the game, but the basic reason for the Game 2 success was simply contesting shots. Atlanta doesn't rely heavily on inside scoring, so getting a hand in the face of the Hawks' jump-shooters is vital. Guard Joe Johnson scored 34 points in Game 1 and was held to 16 on Wednesday. Guard Jamal Crawford knocked down just two of 10 shots in Game 2. Game 3 is Friday at Atlanta's Philips Arena. The Bulls will have to win at least once on the road in order to win the series. Besides bringing the defense and rebounding, the Bulls figure to have a better chance in Atlanta if they can get off to a good start and play with the lead. The Chicago Bulls are in trouble heading south and lose the first game in Atlanta.
