| NBA Finals Game Six: Must Win For Miami Heat Against the Dallas Mavericks |
In the last outing the Mavericks were able to beat the Heat. Closing with a 15-3 run, Dallas moved within one victory of the franchise's first NBA title, moving to a 3-2 lead in these best-of-seven NBA Finals. The Heat lost despite a triple-double from LeBron James, the first in the Heat's postseason history. The greatest concern for the Heat, beyond facing elimination, is a hip injury that limited guard Dwyane Wade throughout Thursday's game. Even at this late stage of the season, Heat guard Dwyane Wade said it remains a challenge to fully maximize his skills, along with the talents of LeBron James and Chris Bosh, in the same offense at the same time. It is why, Wade said, we continue to see games when James is left on the outside of the attack, like he was during the Heat's Game 4 loss to the Mavericks in these NBA Finals, or when he found himself playing a secondary role in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Bulls. That again became the case, to a degree, in Thursday's 112-103 Game 5 loss, as well. James said the lesson is to take care of the little things if the team's other stars are dominating the big picture. "I have to make sure I keep myself active, some way, somehow -- getting offensive rebounds, the put-back, cutting when someone else has the ball, figure out a way to still be effective even if I'm not bringing the ball up or initiating the offense," he said. Still, even with a triple-double Thursday by James, it wasn't enough for the Heat. Of course, with the Heat's offense so rudimentary, often little more than a series of pick-and-rolls, it isn't difficult for the defense to get locked in. "It's either going to be a pick-and-roll or an isolation situation," Mavericks guard Jason Terry said. But that doesn't mean it's not effective when the Heat's stars are at the top of their games. "They've got great players," Terry said. "Their job is to get their players in a situation to be successful. It's worked for them and that's why they're here right now." James said the biggest adjustment is to remain a threat even when playing off the ball. "You can't ever feel like you're not in the offense even though you're on the weak side," James said. "You always have to be like, 'The ball is coming to me, the ball is coming to me,' even when it's all the way on the other side. You have to stay in tune." The Heat have scoffed at fatigue being an issue as they push through their eighth month of the season. However their play would indicate otherwise. The Mavericks have the edge coming into this game with momentum, but the Heat will have rest and home court. This series will go seven games as Miami wins to stay alive.
