The Connecticut Sun Try Not To Set on the Road Against the Washington Mystics
The Connecticut Sun Try Not To Set on the Road Against the Washington MysticsThe Connecticut Sun has a vivid history of being one of the best teams in the WNBA. They have a strong core of players and are a threat to win every night on the floor. Despite all of their success, this team has one glaring problem that will be on display in their next game because it will be on the road.

The Connecticut Sun keep winning at home, but taking care of business on the road has been a long-standing concern for coach Mike Thibault’s team.

The Sun will try to avoid losing in the nation’s capital for a fourth straight time Thursday night when they go for their second victory over the Washington Mystics this season.

Connecticut (2-1) moved to 2-0 at Mohegan Sun Arena with Sunday’s 90-79 victory over Tulsa, improving to 26-10 at home since the start of 2009. The Sun, though, have a 9-26 road record during that stretch - a major reason Thibault’s club has failed to make the postseason since 2008.

Connecticut, which fell 78-75 to Chicago on Friday in its only road game of 2011, has lost three in a row at Washington since an 82-60 victory July 27, 2008. However, the Sun should have plenty of confidence going into Thursday’s visit.

Led by 18 points from reigning rookie of the year Tina Charles, five Sun players scored in double figures in an 89-73 season-opening win over Washington (1-2) on June 4. Connecticut hit 57.1 percent from the field for the fifth-best shooting performance in franchise history.

Mystics first-year coach Trudi Lacey doesn’t want to see similar defensive breakdowns in this game. Her team has been outscored by an average of 10.3 points in the first half this season after trailing the Sky by 18 at halftime of Saturday’s 84-77 home-opening loss.

“It’s becoming habitual that we’re coming out the first half being passive, not being aggressive defensively, not playing smart, missing easy shots,” Lacey told the Mystics’ official website. “The bottom line is that it has to change.”

The Mystics, though, would like to see continued production from Matee Ajavon, who has scored 24 points in back-to-back games since being held to seven on 1-of-8 shooting against the Sun. She’s playing a more central role in the offense with four-time All-Star guard Alana Beard sidelined by a sprained left foot - it’s unclear when she will return.

Ajavon is averaging a career-best 18.3 points, trailing only team leader Crystal Langhorne (20.0).

“I think I’m being a lot more aggressive,” Ajavon said. “Coach Lacey has me out there, so I have to make a difference.”

Sun forward Asjha Jones also has enjoyed a productive start, scoring 16.7 points per game on 63.2 percent shooting. The former Mystics first-round draft pick was 7 of 9 from the field with 14 points and seven boards June 4.

The road team has lost the last eight times these clubs have met. This team is ready to prove they can win on the road and it all starts with this game.
