| The WNBA Features the Chicago Sky vs. New York Liberty on Friday Night |
The best place to wager on the WNBA is the online sportsbook BetPhoenix. The Chicago Sky have had plenty of problems over the years against Cappie Pondexter. That was particularly true in 2010 in the superstar guard’s first season with the New York Liberty. Pondexter helped the Liberty win all four meetings with the Sky last year, and both teams have new coaches as their season series begins Friday night at Allstate Arena. Chicago (2-1) is still looking to reach the playoffs for the first time in its sixth season. New York (2-2) was a major thorn in the Sky’s side last year, sweeping the season series behind Chicago native Pondexter’s 24.8 points per game on 62.7 percent shooting. Pondexter was the second overall pick by Phoenix in 2006 - also the season Chicago entered the league. Her teams are 12-0 against the Sky. There is cause for optimism for Chicago this year, however. The Sky have won both games since rookie Courtney Vandersloot moved into the starting lineup in the second game of the season. The point guard is averaging a team-high 5.3 assists and didn’t commit a turnover in 33 minutes Saturday in an 84-77 win at Washington. Sylvia Fowles scored 23 points and former Liberty forward Cathrine Kraayeveld made a career-high six 3-pointers and scored 19. Chicago shot a season-high 60.0 percent. Fowles is among the league leaders in field-goal shooting at 63.9 percent as she has been reunited with Pokey Chatman, hired to coach the Sky after previously coaching the center at LSU. “The group of girls that we have and the respect that they have for the head coach,” Fowles said of why the Sky have improved. “Everybody is hungry and they just want to go out there and listen and do exactly what she has to say.” The Liberty are 2-0 on the road but enter after dropping consecutive home games. They fell 79-58 to Atlanta on Tuesday, getting held to their lowest scoring output after averaging 85.0 points in their first three games. “We started out great and being able to play on the road is very, very tough,” guard Essence Carson said. “We showed we can do that. We really have to maintain that focus and that hard-nosed, blue-collar, hard workers that we were in those first two games.” Pondexter is off to a slow start, averaging 13.3 points on 38.6 percent shooting. She managed a season-low seven points on 3-of-12 shooting Tuesday. New coach John Whisenant, who guided Sacramento to a title in 2005, is known for implementing tough defense. He’s been hampered by the loss of center Janel McCarville, suspended for the season for failing to report to training camp. The Liberty is struggling entering this game and that will lead to an easy victory for the Sky in this Friday night throw down. Play on Chicago Sky
