WNBA Preview and Prediction: LA Sparks vs. San Antonio Silver Stars
WNBA Preview and Prediction: LA Sparks vs. San Antonio Silver StarsThe Los Angeles Sparks will spend much of the next six weeks on the road, a stretch during which they’ll become particularly familiar with the San Antonio Silver Stars.

The Sparks open a seven-game road trip Friday night against the Silver Stars, who hope to have leading scorer Sophia Young back in the lineup.

Los Angeles (4-1) is looking to win its fourth straight, but extending the streak won’t be easy. The Sparks’ next seven and 11 of its upcoming 13 games are on the road, with the team not returning home from the first leg until July 17.

The only opponent they’ll face twice on this current trip is San Antonio (4-1), with the teams also meeting July 12. Plus, the Silver Stars visit Los Angeles on July 18.

Los Angeles, which lost its only road game 86-69 to Minnesota on June 5, begins this difficult stretch after completing a 3-0 homestand. The Sparks scored more than 95 points in two of the games, including a 96-91 victory over New York on Tuesday on the 15th anniversary of the WNBA’s first game.

“It’s important. It’s the birthday of our league,” said Candace Parker, who finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds. “I think a lot of people, when (the WNBA) started out, didn’t think it would make it to this point. That’s a testament to how great our pioneers of the game were.

“It’s a huge responsibility on us to make sure we have a 30th anniversary.”

DeLisha Milton-Jones scored a season-high 27 points after entering with a 10.8 average. Kristi Toliver added 16 points and seven assists for Los Angeles, which shot 11 of 19 from 3-point range and was at 51.7 percent for the homestand.

The Sparks, who haven’t won four in a row since Sept. 8-13, 2009, begin the trip against another one of the Western Conference’s top teams. San Antonio was the league’s last undefeated club until a 105-98 defeat to Phoenix on Tuesday.

Young, averaging 17.5 points, missed the game with an illness and while the Silver Stars had their highest point total of the season, they also gave up a season high.

“I thought we had a really hard time defensively getting a consistency out of the game,” coach Dan Hughes said. “You can’t be really upset when your team scored 95 points without your leading scorer. But you give up 105 in the process of doing that.”

San Antonio will look to bounce back defensively after allowing the Mercury to shoot 50.6 percent while giving up 42 rebounds. The Silver Stars are allowing 38.2 rebounds per game, second-highest in the league.

“We had a lot of defensive lapses in the post (Tuesday),” said center Jayne Appel, who had 11 rebounds in 14 minutes. “Definitely all correctable stuff.”

San Antonio took three of four against Los Angeles last year, including both home games. The Sparks are hot but they are a much different team on the road and they will see their winning streak come to an end.
