The San Antonio Silver Stars have lost their last two visits to New York, but there’s a good chance that skid won’t reach three games given their play on the road.

On Friday night, the Silver Stars look to improve to 5-0 away from home for the first time since 2006 when they visit a Liberty team that played the night before.

San Antonio (7-1) has won three straight overall and has a chance to sweep its three-game road swing. Sophia Young scored 19 points Tuesday as the Silver Stars defeated Chicago 84-74, relying on their defense for a change.

San Antonio averaged 95.3 points in its first three road games, but it shot 37.7 percent Tuesday. The Silver Stars, who sank 10 of 10 from the foul line in the final 1:05 to preserve the win, held the Sky below 20 points in three of the four quarters and 21 in the other.

“Defensively our team got better as the game went on especially in the second half,” Becky Hammon said. “It was just a grind tonight. It wasn’t a pretty game but we found a way win. I thought our post players did an exceptional job hitting big shots for us and just playing really good defense.”

Hammon and the Silver Stars will try to put on another solid defensive performance as they visit the Liberty (4-5), who are looking to bounce back after blowing a seven-point halftime lead in an 87-81 loss to Atlanta on Thursday.

New York allowed 50 second-half points, was outscored 46-22 in the paint and outrebounded 36-28.

“We kind of gave the game away in the second half,” said Cappie Pondexter, who scored 24 points for her fifth straight game with at least 20. “We didn’t execute when we needed to and we turned the ball over in many situations, so there were many little things that we learned from tonight.”

New York might have an easier time inside against San Antonio, which is giving up a league-worst 39.0 boards per game.

The Liberty lost their first two home games, but picked up a victory over Los Angeles on June 26. New York, which is averaging 71.7 points at home compared to 85.3 on the road, has won its last two at home against the Silver Stars and three straight overall between the two.

The teams are idle after this game until facing each other in San Antonio next Friday. In this crucial game the Liberty will be the team to beat and will get the victory.
