| WNBA Preview: LA Sparks vs. Phoenix Mercury |
The best place to wager on the WNBA is the online sportsbook BetPhoenix. Overcoming the absence of former MVP Candace Parker is sure to be a difficult task for the Los Angeles Sparks. Earning their first road victory would be a step in the right direction. Los Angeles continues a seven-game trip Tuesday night when it meets the surging Phoenix Mercury. Playing their first game without Parker, who will miss at least five more weeks with a torn meniscus in her right knee, the Sparks (4-4) fell 79-76 to Connecticut last Tuesday. It marked their third straight loss to begin the trip and dropped them to 0-4 on the road overall. Los Angeles is in the midst of a stretch in which it plays 11 of 13 games away from home. Parker played only 10 games last season due to a shoulder injury, and the Sparks went 10-14 without her. She was averaging 17.7 points and 9.9 rebounds before this injury, and the 6-foot-4 center played a crucial defensive role in the paint. The Sun’s Tina Charles exploited Parker’s absence by scoring 22 points and grabbing 23 rebounds - one short of the WNBA record. “I knew that at the beginning, we would either come out and play really well or there would be a lack of chemistry on both ends of the floor because of Candace’s absence,” coach Jennifer Gillom said. “This is our first game without her and true enough, we had a hard time finding that chemistry early on.” With the starting lineup struggling, Kristi Toliver scored a team-high 19 points off the bench. Veteran forwards Tina Thompson and DeLisha Milton-Jones were a combined 9 of 28 from the field and are shooting 33.8 percent on the road trip. Thompson scored 21 points and Milton-Jones added 18 in the Sparks’ 98-84 victory over Phoenix on June 10 in the teams’ only matchup this year. Mercury star Diana Taurasi was held to nine points in that loss but averaged 20.0 as Phoenix won four of five meetings last season, including both at US Airways Center. Taurasi scored 24 points Friday to lead the Mercury (5-4) to a 97-84 victory over Chicago. She went 11 of 12 from the foul line as Phoenix set a franchise record by hitting 42 free throws. Taurasi is averaging 20.1 points, second in the league to Chicago’s Sylvia Fowles (20.7). The Mercury overcame a 15-point deficit to win for the fifth time in six games after dropping their first three of the season. Penny Taylor, who scored a team-high 18 points in June’s loss to the Sparks, added 14 points Friday and was one of five Phoenix players in double figures. “We had several players step up and carry us,” Taurasi told the team’s official website. “That’s what we’re going to need all season. It was a good win for us.” Phoenix is the league’s highest scoring team, averaging 90.3 points. LA is going to shock Phoenix and win without their best player. Play on the LA Sparks
