| WNBA Preview: LA Sparks vs. Tulsa Shock |
The best place to wager on the WNBA is the online sportsbook BetPhoenix. The Los Angeles Sparks snapped a lengthy skid in their first game under Joe Bryant. The Tulsa Shock’s win drought has only grown since a coaching change. The Sparks will try to post back-to-back wins for the second time this season Friday night when they face the woeful Shock, losers of seven in a row. After dropping five straight to open a seven-game road trip, Los Angeles general manager Penny Toler dismissed Jennifer Gillom on Sunday and elevated Bryant from assistant. The father of Lakers star Kobe Bryant ran the Sparks (5-6) from August 2005 to the end of the 2006 season and helped the franchise reach the playoffs in both years. Los Angeles responded to the change in leadership with an 84-74 win over San Antonio on Tuesday. Veteran guard Ticha Penicheiro had a season-high 18 points off the bench as the Sparks’ reserves outscored the Silver Stars’ 49-22, lifting their team to its first win in seven road games this season. “It was not a monkey,” Penicheiro said of the losing streaks. “It was an orangutan, a gorilla on our back.” The Shock (1-12) are still lugging their gorilla around after falling 72-54 at Chicago on Wednesday, their fourth loss by 18 or more in the last seven games. Tulsa suffered its most lopsided defeat of the season Sunday - 102-63 to Phoenix - in Teresa Edwards’ debut as interim coach. The four-time Olympic gold medalist and Hall of Famer took over after Nolan Richardson resigned. “We’re excited, it feels like a fresh start, a new start,” forward Tiffany Jackson said. “We know coach Edwards is really going to get after us. We’re learning from the best, so we are excited about it.” The Shock were competitive in last season’s series with the Sparks, losing the final three games by a combined 15 points. Dating to its days in Detroit, though, the Tulsa franchise has dropped seven of eight to Los Angeles. Avoiding another loss could prove difficult for the Shock, as they rank near the bottom of the WNBA with 70.6 points per game, 38.7 percent shooting, 85.5 points allowed per contest and a 49.2 opponents’ shooting percentage. The Shock appear to be catching a break with Sparks star forward Candace Parker out with a torn right meniscus. Los Angeles, though, swept last season’s four matchups without Parker’s help. She played in only 10 games in 2010 due to injury. The Shock takes advantage of the injury and get the win over LA. Play on the Tulsa Shock
