| WNBA Preview: New York Liberty vs. Connecticut Sun |
While Pondexter continues to lead the Liberty, Nicol The New York Liberty’s Cappie Pondexter has been selected to start alongside the Connecticut Sun’s Tina Charles in next week’s All-Star game. While Pondexter continues to lead the Liberty, Nicole Powell has also stepped up during the team’s longest winning streak of the season. New York looks for a fifth consecutive victory overall and a fifth straight over visiting Connecticut, which tries to avoid a season-worst three-game skid Friday night. The Liberty (8-5) lost four straight in June but have since taken six of seven - including four in a row - a run during which they’ve outscored opponents by an average of 9.5 points. New York took a 54-37 lead into halftime - its highest-scoring first half of the season and the franchise record at home - en route to recording its most lopsided victory of the year, 91-69 over Atlanta on Wednesday. “From the moment the ball tipped off we could feel the energy,” said Pondexter, the team leader with 17.8 points per game. “We didn’t come out lax. We came out with a lot of energy. That was the difference.” Pondexter, the only player in the league who ranks top five in scoring, assists (5.2) and steals (1.8), made just five of 13 shots and was held to 10 points. Powell, though, continued her impressive play with a season-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting, going 5 for 5 from 3-point range. “Nicole, the last three games has been exceptional,” Pondexter said of Powell, who is averaging 14.0 points during the team’s winning streak - 4.5 more than her season mark. “I think her energy on both ends of the court has made us a better team without question. She’s bringing it now…she’s playing out of her mind like the Nicole that we’ve seen in the past.” While Pondexter struggled a bit Wednesday, she could be line for a bounce-back performance given her recent efforts versus Connecticut. She averaged 24.5 points to help New York take the last four meetings last season. The Sun, meanwhile, (6-5) dropped to 2-4 in their last six contests overall after falling 90-78 at Indiana on Wednesday for the team’s fourth straight road defeat. Charles, who scored a season-low six points on 3-of-13 from the floor during Saturday’s 90-67 loss at Minnesota, bounced back with 15 and 11 rebounds Wednesday. She earned high praise from coach Mike Thibault after being named to the East’s All-Star squad. “She earned it,” Thibault told the Sun’s official website. “Obviously she’s become one of the dominant inside players in our league and I know that she will represent our team extremely well in San Antonio.” Charles could have an easier time down low if New York’s Plenette Pierson isn’t able to play. The 6-foot-2 forward was removed from Wednesday’s contest after spraining her left knee and her status for this game remains unknown. Pierson is third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding, averaging 13.0 points and 5.3 boards. Powell has also stepped up during the team’s longest winning streak of the season. New York looks for a fifth consecutive victory overall and a fifth straight over visiting Connecticut, which tries to avoid a season-worst three-game skid Friday night.
