WNBA Preview: Minnesota Lynx vs. Phoenix Mercury
Minnesota Lynx vs. Phoenix MercuryAll-Star Tina Charles and the Connecticut Sun have been unstoppable at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

One week ago, the Phoenix Mercury scored a season-high 112 points to beat the Minnesota Lynx and grab sole possession of first place in the Western Conference.

Minnesota is out to reclaim the top spot in the rematch. The Lynx look to halt the Mercury’s six-game winning streak when the teams meet in Phoenix on Wednesday night. Minnesota (9-4) let an 11-point, fourth-quarter lead slip away in a 112-105 loss last Wednesday, surrendering 39 points in the final 10 minutes.

“That (game) definitely left a bad taste in our mouth, but we know what we need to do and what we didn’t do in the last game that enabled us to put ourselves in that position,” forward Rebekkah Brunson told the Lynx’s official website. “We just have to work on some things defensively, buckle down. We have a great game plan so we’re just going to try and go out there and try to win.”

Minnesota will need to better defend Mercury star Diana Taurasi, who scored 27 points and hit five 3-pointers in last week’s matchup.

“Sometimes that has to happen to you to really make that recognition,” Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said of her team’s breakdown at the defensive end. “I thought we had a great deal of emphasis on our defense, a lot of focus on it. Two games (since) of pretty good ‘D,’ so we kind of got back to who we are.”

Minnesota is second-best in the league with 74.2 points allowed per game. Phoenix is averaging a WNBA-high 92.3 points, led by Taurasi with 19.3 and Penny Taylor at 15.9.

“When you play those guys, you can’t have them both on,” Reeve said. “If you have them both on, you have a problem.”

Taurasi became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 points when she scored 13 in a 78-65 win over Washington on Friday. The Mercury (10-4) have won 10 of 11.

“It’s still early in the season, but it’s good to build something,” Taurasi said. “We’ve reached that point where we’re confident in what we’re doing.”

The Lynx also have some confidence after winning their last two games, most recently defeating Seattle 69-62 on Saturday.

Seimone Augustus scored 19 points and helped her team go on a decisive 22-2 run that spanned the first and second half. She has averaged 18.3 points over her last four games to raise her season average to 15.2.

Lynx rookie Maya Moore was held to seven points Saturday, but she’s averaging 14.2 and was voted, along with Taurasi, to start in the All-Star game this weekend.

Moore scored 15 points but went 0 for 9 from 3-point range against Phoenix last week. Minnesota would look some revenge, but Phoenix is just too talented and will get the win.
