Heavyweights Lesnar And Carwin Face Off At UFC 116
Heavyweights Lesnar And Carwin Face Off At UFC 116Brock Lesnar will defend his UFC heavyweight title this weekend in his first action since a serious health problem threatened his career. The former WWE pro wrestling superstar will meet the monstrous Shane Carwin in the main event of UFC 116 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. This will be Lesnar’s first defense of the championship which he unified with a victory over interim champion Frank Mir at UFC 100. Carwin earned his title shot with a decisive victory over Mir at UFC 111.

Despite the overwhelming mainstream popularity of Lesnar, the UFC betting odds for the fight are surprisingly close. Lesnar is listed as a -135 favorite, with takeback on Carwin at +105. The fight opened with Lesnar nearly a 2 to 1 choice, so clearly there’s a good deal of public sentiment that Carwin can become UFC champion. With the over/under round prop posted at 1.5 rounds, it’s apparent that no one is expecting this fight to be a tactical battle that goes to a decision.

The two men were originally slated to fight at UFC 106, but Lesnar was forced to withdraw due to an illness which at the time was thought to be mononucleosis. The bout was tentatively rescheduled for UFC 108 and then cancelled again due to Lesnar’s continued health problems. Lesnar was later diagnosed to be suffering from diverticulitis, and for a time considered potentially career threatening. Since then, however, he’s made a recovery that he describes as ‘miraculous’ and is now ready to return to the cage.

Shane Carwin is an interesting story in his own right. A very successful NCAA Division II wrestler, Carwin is a graduate of the Colorado College of Mines and until recently worked full time as an engineer while pursuing his MMA career. He’s one of the few men in the sport who can physically match up to Lesnar—at 6’2” he has to cut weight to reach the heavyweight limit of 265 pounds and his hands are so large that he needs to have his gloves specially made in a 3XL size.

Carwin enters the bout with Lesnar with a perfect professional record of 12-0 with all wins coming by either knockout or submission. Carwin’s dominance to this point is such that no opponent has ever made it out of the first round, though he’s only recently stepped up in class to face top level opponents. That being said, he destroyed former top contender Gabriel Gonzaga in just over a minute at UFC 96 and knockout out Mir at the 3:48 mark of the first round to set up his UFC 116 title shot.

Regardless of who emerges victorious, they’ll immediately face another very big challenge. Lesnar or Carwin will make their next title defense against another up and coming—and undefeated—superstar in Cain Velasquez. Velasquez is 8-0 and coming off of a dominating win over the highly respected Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
