Croatian MMA Legend Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ To Retire?
Croatian MMA Legend Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ To Retire? When Croatian MMA legend Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic entered the UFC, he was the most feared heavyweight in the world. He had just dominated the competition en route to winning the PRIDE Open Weight Grand Prix tournament in September 2006, stopping Wanderlei Silva in the semifinals and Josh Barnett in the finals on the same night. He made short work of journeyman Eddie Sanchez in his octagon debut and the expectation was that he’d soon challenge Randy Couture for the UFC heavyweight championship. Instead, he was never the same fighter again. Cro Cop began an inexorable downward spiral that culminated with a TKO loss to Frank Mir at this weekend’s UFC 119 event. Every indication now is that he’ll be retiring from the sport, possibly as soon as his arrival back in Croatia.

Cro Cop suffered a number of injuries during the past few years, but some question whether the bigger problem wasn’t a lack of desire. In other words, he simply lost the hunger necessary to be a top level prizefighter. He had the talent to earn often ragged victories over second tier fighters, but following his move to the UFC would never again beat a top level heavyweight losing to Alistair Overeem, Gabriel Gonzaga, Chieck Kongo and Junior Dos Santos. He also never looked to be comfortable fighting in a cage as opposed to the ring favored by the Japanese promotions.

The loss to Mir wasn’t overly embarrassing, but it wasn’t particularly competitive. The two men did little for the first two rounds but in the third Mir opened a barrage of punches that eventually ended the fight. The decisive blow was a knee to the head that Cro Cop ducked into while moving in for an attack. Cro Cop was counted out at 4:02 of the third round.

Cro Cop has teased retirement several times in the past after losses, only to return to competition following surgery or a change in this training team. This time is different, however, and there’s every indication that he’ll hang ‘em up for good. Even the Croatian media—where Cro Cop is a huge star—is describing the Mir loss in terms of grim finality and offering up retrospectives of his ‘legendary career’. A few pundits have described his retirement as ‘inevitable’.

He will leave behind a career of domination in both K-1 kickboxing and MMA fighting. It’s unfortunate that most US MMA fans will remember Cro Cop for his underachieving UFC career. During the two years before his move to the #1 American MMA promotion he was without a doubt the most feared striker on the planet and following his impressive victory at the PRIDE Open Weight GP tournament was considered close to the level of then undefeated Russian icon Fedor Emelianenko.
