MMA Strike Force Preview: Tim Kennedy vs. Robbie Lawler
MMA Strike Force Preview: Tim Kennedy vs. Robbie LawlerStrikeforce middleweights Tim Kennedy and Robbie Lawler will sling leather at tomorrow night's (July 30) "Fedor vs. Henderson" Showtime event, which will emanate from the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, IL.

"Ruthless" Robbie Lawler is heading back to the cage this weekend for the first time since January, when he lost via submission to Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the third round of a fight for the Strikeforce middleweight title.

Now, the UFC veteran will meet former Green Beret Tim Kennedy on the main card of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson in an attempt to get back in the win column and climb the sparsely crowded Strikeforce middleweight ranks. In a recent conversation with MMAFighting.com, Lawler discussed with Ariel Helwani what he sees in Kennedy as an opponent.

Kennedy, who makes his way into the outskirts of the "Windy City," was last seen strangling Melvin Manhoef at the "Feijao vs. Henderson" event back in March.

It was his first fight back since his title loss to Ronaldo Souza, a close five-round decision defeat. That, combined with the fact that he's won five of his last six bouts, has the former Green Beret marching into the cage as a -280 betting favorite.

Lawler was last in action this past January in San Jose, also coming up short against "Jacare," submitting to a rear-naked choke in the third frame.

Ruthless, who has taken to training at Power MMA in Arizona with the likes of CB Dollaway, Ryan Bader and Aaron Simpson, points to Kennedy's affiliation with the Greg Jackson camp as evidence that he is a solid competitor.

"Yeah, he's at a high level, he trains at a high level," he said. "He trains with good guys, has a good camp behind him. So, yeah, he's a good fighter."

The 29-year-old was asked how many fights away from a title shot he sees himself with a victory over Kennedy and, after a long pause, this was his reply: "I don't know, one?"

That loss continued the streak of win-one, lose-one that "Ruthless" has been riding since July 2008, which the oddsmakers believe will be snapped tomorrow night and have accordingly pegged him as the +220 underdog.

Or it could be due to the dangerous submission skills of Kennedy, something Lawler has struggled with in the past, losing five of seven contests by way of tap, nap or snap.

Can he stay upright long enough to uncork one of his trademarked bombs? Online sportsbook BetPhoenix has Tim Kennedy listed as a -200 favorite in this battle and that price is well placed, but worth it for people that like to bet on MMA. Tim Kennedy will win this fight with a straight forward approach and emerge victorious.
