UFC 135 Preview: Matt Hughes vs. Josh Koscheck
UFC 135 Preview: Matt Hughes vs. Josh KoscheckUFC 135 will be displayed on pay per view this weekend with some of the best fights on tap. The betting odds on UFC and other mixed martial arts fights can be found at online sportsbook Bet Phoenix. They have the latest UFC 135 odds and betting props for this weekend’s big pay per view event.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, Matt Hughes of Hillsboro will be entering the octagon for the 54th time in his professional mixed martial arts career, featured in the co-main event at UFC 135 at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Hughes, 37, was preparing to face off against Diego Sanchez, a 29-year-old left hander. That all changed a few weeks ago when Sanchez broke a bone in his hand and had to withdraw from the fight. In stepped Josh Koscheck, a 33-year-old right hander with a record of 17-5.

Hughes-versus-Koscheck looks like a pretty good match up. They have each won six of their last ten fights and each has fought against several of the same opponents.

Both have fought the current welterweight champion, George St. Pierre, losing to him on two occasions, but Hughes did have one spectacular win over St. Pierre in 2004. Both lost to Thiago Alvez, both won by decision over Chris Lytle, and both beat up on Frank Trigg in convincing fashion.

Koscheck enters the fight ranked number six in the world (Sanchez was ranked ninth) and Las Vegas oddsmakers give him the edge in the upcoming battle.

Rarely, if ever, has an opponent surpassed welterweight icon Matt Hughes’ level of confidence-bordering-on-arrogance. However, in the case of Josh Koscheck there’s no question Hughes’ adversary at UFC 135 should be entering the fight with unwavering self-assurance.

“Here’s what is up: (Hughes) used to be one of the best. Used to be. Right now he’s nowhere near even one of the best in the world. Where is he ranked? Probably not in a lot people’s Top 10. But he’s still got that name and is a two-time champion, and beating a name like that in my comeback fight means something,” wrote the Ultimate Fighter Season 1 alumnus. “I got lucky to get Hughes, a guy who cannot beat my style and he knows it. He can’t strike with me and he can’t use his wrestling against me like he could some of the guys he’s been beating.”

“Now I am going put (Hughes) in his place,” Koscheck continued. “When he was on top, he wouldn’t give any of us ‘kids’ our shot at him. He never manned up. Now he’s been forced to fight me and this is going to be so much fun.”

Koscheck is 15-5 in his career and will be coming off a nine-month layoff when he faces the 45-8 Hughes.
