UFC-136: "EDGAR VS MAYNARD-3 Betting Preview
UFC-136: EDGAR VS MAYNARD-3 Betting PreviewThis weekend UFC-136: "EDGAR VS MAYNARD-3 invades Houston with hard-hitting action. Watching the fight is just as fun as betting on the fight and all of the latest odds for this fight can be found at BetPhoenix.
The main card reads like a Zuffa card set in Las Vegas featuring a Lightweight bout with Melvin Guillard facing off against Joe Lauzon, a Featherweight bout featuring Leonard Garcia and Nam Phan, and Middleweight bout with MMA loudmouth Chael Sonnen and war hero Brian Stann. The night will then conclude with two of the sport’s most exciting matchups with the UFC Featherweight and Lightweight titles on the line. Muay Thai phenom Jose Aldo will be defending his Featherweight crown against Ultimate Fighter and UFC veteran Kenny Florian, and Frankie Edgar will conduct a third and final defense of his Lightweight title against Gray Maynard.

When it comes to former Houston resident Melvin Guillard it’s no secret that his biggest battle has been himself. With that being said Guillard has since conquered his demons and has proven to be a contender in the Lightweight division. His opponent Joe Lauzon has quietly climbed the ranks in his own right amassing 7 out of 10 victories in the Octagon. Look for Guillard to try and make quick work of Lauzon via knock out and watch for Lauzon to use his extensive Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills to break and submit Guillard. I don’t see this one going past the second round and it will end with Guillard’s hand raised.

As far as Leonard Garcia and Nam Phan are concerned, this one will be a war of attrition in their second meeting. Garcia is known for sloppy albeit exciting fights and Phan is known for having been robbed against Garcia despite earning Fight of the Night honors at the Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale in 2010. In this bout I see Phan avenging his previous loss, utilizing clean stand up versus the wild and looping shots of Garcia. This has the potential of 3 exciting rounds with little slowing down.

Chael Sonnen has been known to have the flair and panache of a 1980’s professional wrestler with his loud and brash commentary over fighters like Anderson Silva and his opinions over the Brazilian fighter population in general. This time around he has proven to be respectful and aware of his opponent’s skill and abilities. War hero Brian Stann will be taking on his friend and would be training partner in this Middleweight bout. Both fighters possess talents that will lead them to UFC title contention but as far as this fight goes, Chael Sonnen I believe will take this fight using his patented Team Quest wrestling and ground and pound. Don’t forget that Sonnen is the only man to ever really beat up Anderson Silva and Stann has proven to have trouble with wrestlers. I don’t see Sonnen’s cage rust being a factor in this one either. Sonnen for the win via TKO.

In the co-main event with Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian I see Aldo doing what he does best: Muay Thai. As a former soccer player Aldo has translated his soccer kicks into the most lethal weapons in the Lightweight division making him one of the most feared men in MMA. Anderson Silva was even quoted as saying that he’d retire if Aldo went up to Middleweight giving credence to Jose’s reign as champion. Florian has also evolved as a Jiu Jitsu player into a Muay Thai fighter in his own right with Team Sityodtong. In his career in the UFC he has fought in 4 weight classes and has been called a “choker” by UFC President Dana White referring to his losses in title contention fights. This reputation may continue after Saturday night. I see Aldo dominating the bout with fast paced movement that will accentuate his kicks. Aldo will retain his Featherweight crown and no doubt will clean out his division.

The main event at UFC 136 features Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard in their third and final bout for the UFC Lightweight title. This was a fight that fans initially thought would be boring and void of any real excitement and they were all proven wrong. I see Edgar vs. Maynard as a true trilogy in the company of Couture v. Liddell. In this bout we have two young and sharp fighters that bring in superior wrestling and striking skills. The first two fights were so close that it’s hard to pick a winner in the third bout but I’d have to give it to Edgar. Despite being a title holder I feel as though he hasn’t been given the respect and reverence as champion. Maynard definitely has the skill to take the belt if he can pace himself and not try to flurry Edgar at every chance.

This fight will be one for the ages and entertaining to watch. This fully loaded card will be one that you cannot miss!
