Derry has enjoyed a resurgence recently involving a fantastic prizefighter performance followed by four more wins before being halted to a technical draw by a nasty cut in his european title clash with the Welshman Rees. His opponent on Friday is the relatively-unknown but reigning Italian lightweight champion and is unbeaten in eight years and 24 fights. Matthews was being tipped for a big future a few years back before suffering numerous setbacks that halted his career, fortunately for everyone concerned he seems to have regained his confidence and came to prominence again in the Prizefighter in November 2011. Mathews pulled off big shock when he eliminated his previous conqueror and tournament favorite Choi in the semifinals via a decision. However, he was clearly shattered in the final and came up against a very fresh Gary Buckland and was stopped in short time. Marsili is currently ranked seventh by the E.B.U and holds a 23-0 record with 9 KO’s, looking at that it appears it’s an extremely dangerous matchup for the Liverpudlian. The Italian looks supremely confident in his abilities and he has beaten quite a few Italian fighters with very good records, obviously it’s hard to judge the strength in depth of the Italian lightweight division, but he’s certainly the best that they have. If he can avoid Mathews long shots and get inside, Mathews could face a severe test of his skills. I don’t see Derry Matthews losing this bout, I have rated him as a fighter for quite a while now and don’t see a fighter from Italy coming into Liverpool and taking this away from him, I think he can box at range in this fight and draw the Italian onto him, I don’t expect him to look for a stoppage and considering Mathews has never been a full 12 before I expect him to slow his pace down, I do think he can box his way to a comfortable decision. Matthews will have to be careful however as his opponent should not be taken lightly. If he is the end result could be a surprise and a windfall for Emiliano Marsili betting fans.
