| Shane Carwin Dominates Frank Mir At UFC 111 |
Much like Mir’s battle with Lesnar, the matchup with Carwin pitted technical expertise against power. Mir has noticeably bulked up in recent months, but his ‘bread and butter’ remains his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission skill. He didn’t even get a chance to work for a submission on Saturday night. After a stalemate early in the round the massive Carwin unloaded a powerful series of punches that left his opponent helpless in the center of the cage. Mir had entered as a slight -150 UFC betting favorite, with a +120 takeback on Carwin. No one expected the bout to go the five round distance, but neither did they expect such a quick and decisive finish. After receiving a series of bludgeoning power punches from Carwin, Mir bravely tried to get to his feet only to be met with another barrage that ended the fight. Until a year ago, Carwin continued to work full time as an engineer as he pursued his fighting career. Now he’s a full time mixed martial artist and is one step away from the UFC’s top prize. Carwin improved his record to 12-0, with none of the fights having made it out of the first round. Mir lasted the longest of any previous opponent—none of Carwin’s previous eleven adversaries had been able to make the two minute mark. After the victory, current heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar entered the cage. Despite spending much of the past year battling a career threatening intestinal condition, he was roundly booed by the live crowd at Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center. Despite this ‘heel’ reaction, Lesnar conducted himself very graciously as he congratulated Carwin on the win. He did add that the interim title was a ‘make believe belt’, a verbal jab to which Carwin readily agreed. In other action, welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre completely dominated tough Brit Dan Hardy en route to a lopsided unanimous decision victory. Despite catching his opponent in several painful submission moves, St. Pierre was unable to finish his gutsy opponent. In other action, Jon Fitch had no problem with late replacement Ben Saunders in earning a unanimous decision victory. Local New Jersey fighter Kurt Pellegrino survived a first round rear naked choke attempt to come back and submit Fabricio Camoes. In the opening match on the PPV broadcast, another local fighter—Jim Miller—was the beneficiary of a ‘hometown decision’ as he beat Mark Bocek despite most observers having the fight scored the other way.

Since his loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 100, Frank Mir has been obsessed with getting a rematch. That quest ran into a big roadblock on Saturday night in the person of Shane Carwin. With the interim heavyweight title at stake, Carwin overpowered Mir to earn a first round knockout victory in the UFC 111 co-main event. Carwin will now face Lesnar in July to unify the titles.
