Jets’ All Pro Cornerback Revis Holding Out Over Contract
Jets’ All Pro Cornerback Revis Holding Out Over ContractThe New York Jets received some very distressing news on Sunday with the announcement that All Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis is unhappy with his current contract and is planning to hold out until its renegotiated. Revis missed a mandatory team meeting and a conditioning run on Sunday, and sources report that he’s willing to continue his holdout ‘indefinitely’. With neither side appearing in the mood to capitulate, he could be out of action for awhile.

Revis is in the fourth year of his six-year rookie contact and is set to earn $1 million. This makes him one of the lowest paid defensive backs on the team, let alone the league. Clearly he’s underpaid relative to his talent and impact, but he’s looking to become league's highest-paid cornerback. This means he’s looking for a deal in excess of $45 million which the current highest paid DB—Nnamdi Asomugha—signed last year. Revis reportedly rejected a pair of offers tendered by the team at the last minute, one short term deal and a long term package that would have made him "a Jet for life."

Revis’ agent Neil Schwartz suggested that the holdout was the final option to get the team to rework his deal:

"We were hoping Darrelle wouldn't have to go down this path. He and his family were extremely deliberate in this decision making process. Darrelle Revis' actions will speak louder than words. And his absence will be deafening."

The two sides are clearly far apart on what Revis is worth, which Jets’ GM Mike Tannenbaum described as “a fundamental disagreement on total compensation.” He gave these comments on the situation:

"The lines of communication are open and we remain committed to finding a solution that makes sense for him and makes sense for us. The two things that we've all agreed upon is that Darrelle has outplayed his contract and it needed to be addressed, and he has three years to go on his contract."

Head coach Rex Ryan sounded a more diplomatic tone:

"He's a great player, the best corner I've ever been around. So, certainly, I'm disappointed. I really thought, in my heart, he would be signed by now and we wouldn't be having these conversations."

Revis isn’t the only Jet looking to renegotiate his deal. All pro center Nick Mangold is looking for a contract extension, but chose to show up for the opening of training camp. Mangold is making $3.3 million entering the final year of his rookie contract.
