Offenses Sputter As Falcons Top Chiefs
Offenses Sputter As Falcons Top ChiefsThe Atlanta Falcons used a solid fourth quarter effort from their reserves to top the Kansas City Chiefs 20-10 in the preseason opener for both teams. After a horrible first half for both first team offenses, the Falcons and the Chiefs headed to the locker room deadlocked 3-3. The Falcons reserves took over the second half and eventually opened up a 20-3 lead. Kansas City finally scored a touchdown in the waning seconds of the game to narrow the Falcons’ margin of victory but that was small consolation in an otherwise dismal debut for new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.

Atlanta cashed bettors’ tickets by covering the NFL pointspread as -2’ point home favorites. The Falcons have traditionally been a good preseason investment and the cover improved their record since 1990 to 49-33 ATS. The Chiefs have struggled in NFL exhibition play and the loss dropped Kansas City to a dreadful 29-52 ATS in the same timeframe. They’re also on a 1-6 ATS run in Week 1 of the preseason and have covered only one of their last 13 exhibition contests. The 30 combined points scored went UNDER the posted total of 34.

Falcons’ QB Matt Ryan didn’t have a particularly impressive evening, but didn’t sound particularly concerned in his post game comments:

"It felt good to finally go in a game-type atmosphere with the game speed and pass rush and everything like that.”

His Kansas City counterpart, Matt Cassel, sounded far more shellshocked as the Chiefs remained winless in the preseason during his and head coach Todd Haley’s tenure with the team:

"We're just trying to make progress. There's light at the end of the tunnel."

Hopefully that light isn’t an oncoming freight train. The Chiefs started the Todd Haley era with a winless preseason and then lost the first five regular season games en route to a 4-12 SU season. Haley tried to put the best spin possible on the loss:

"Our club has a bunch to work on. We had some really good situations to work from and we left a couple of them on the wayside. There were some positives."

The Falcons now face a quick turnaround to their next game, hosting New England on Thursday night. Kansas City will try to break their preseason losing streak as they play at Tampa Bay on Saturday. Atlanta will start the regular season at Pittsburgh, where they’ll find themselves in the role of a road favorite. The Falcons are currently a -2’ point chalk against the Steelers with the total set at 38. Kansas City will start their 2010 campaign by hosting the San Diego Chargers in one of two Monday Night Football games on September 13. The Chiefs are a +5’ point home underdog with the total set at 45.
