| Purdue Boilermakers Vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish |
Last year Charlie Weis was fired as head coach and Notre Dame went out and hired Brian Kelly, luring him away from the University of Cincinnati. Kelly left his team before a bowl game, and his controversial exit was surrounded by questions and speculation. Purdue is a young team that still needs some pieces, but they are not a pushover. Robert Marve will be at the helm for Purdue this year and this transfer out of Miami has a rocket for an arm. He has looked outstanding in spring drills at practice up to this point, and will develop as a Heisman candidate if Purdue has any success on the football field. Since Purdue is thin at running back the offense will rest on his shoulders. Ralph Bolden will miss most of the season and Al-Terek McBurse is practicing with an injury to his left leg. True freshman Reggie Pegram is the remaining option in the backfield and will have to learn the system and the college game quickly if he hopes to contribute. The Irish are excited to run Kelly’s spread offense and have the players to do it. Quarterback Dayne Crist is up to the challenge of the new system. Wide Receiver Michael Floyd will be his main target against a suspect Purdue defense. With the offense on course, it will be interesting to see how the defense responds. The Irish defense will be immeasurably improved from the unit from a year ago. They should snuff an inadequate rushing game and put pressure Marve all day long. Purdue’s defense is an Achilles heel for that team and because of this Purdue is 5-12 against the spread (ATS) in road games where the total is posted between 52.5 and 56. Kelly is using this game to make a statement and winning at home is important to a successful season. Purdue will put up points with the vaunted offense, but it won’t be enough to beat the Irish on their own turf in the season opener. This is a new year, a new coaching staff, and a new attitude for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame wins big at home to start the season. Play on Notre Dame -12 By Matt Regaw
