LSU vs. North Carolina In Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game
LSU vs. North Carolina In Chick-Fil-A Kickoff GameYou won’t hear us say anything bad about Chick-Fil-a’s tasty sandwiches, but we’re not really sold on their concept of a ‘bowl game to open the season’. Gary Stokan, CEO and President of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl compares this to the Daytona 500—considered NASCAR’s biggest race of the year and the traditional season opener. To be perfectly honest, we’ve never really been sold on this in NASCAR either but they can at least point to the tradition of having always done it this way. Stoken says that the game—now in its third season—has “created that BCS experience at the front side of the season.” While that may be somewhat hyperbolic, the game does offer a compelling matchup on a weekend with no shortage of mismatched ‘paycheck games’ as #16 LSU takes on #18 North Carolina at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Despite Stoken’s claims to have created a ‘BCS experience’, his game hasn’t been an easy sell to quality teams for obvious reasons—they don’t want to risk an early season loss that’ll knock them out of the real, bona fide ‘BCS experience’ at the end of the year. As a result—and to paraphrase noted football betting authority Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs—the game has become “all about the Benjamins”. The game pays participants enough money to make it worth the risk of an early season loss. We’re talking a payout of around $2 million — this year, for example, North Carolina should clear around $1.75 million and get some prime time TV exposure. From a financial standpoint, both teams will leave Atlanta a winner.

The competitive reality is that neither team will be a factor in the BCS standings, so the downside of a loss at this point of the year is negligible. In any case, North Carolina has far bigger concerns at the moment than this football season. They’re the focus of a massive NCAA investigation involving a laundry list of alleged offenses including improper contact between players and agents, academic impropriety and out and out bribes. So far, there have been no formal charges and the team has said they’ll wait until the investigation is complete before they consider suspension of players or other sanctions. That notwithstanding, Tar Heels’ all ACC defensive tackle Marvin Austin—one of the focal points of the alleged violations—has been suspended for this game though the team stresses that it has nothing to do with the NCAA investigation.

From a handicapping perspective, the dark cloud over the North Carolina program raises serious questions about their focus in this matchup. That’s the primary reason why the game has moved from a ‘pick’ to the current price of LSU -5. The usual matchup considerations go out the window when the future of the program is in serious doubt, and while there may be talent parity in this matchup there’s a very strong possibility that only LSU will be in the proper frame of mind for a tough football game. Hard to make a case for North Carolina given the circumstances surrounding this game.
