| Vikings And Saints Open NFL Season On Thursday Night |
The Saints are in pretty good shape entering the regular season, bringing back virtually all of the significant contributors from last year’s team. Drew Brees will once again quarterback New Orleans’ potent offensive attack, and the Saints highly underrated defense is also intact. Minnesota finally has Brett Favre committed for yet another season under center, but there’s some concern about the team’s wide receiver corps. Former University of South Carolina standout Sidney Rice had a breakout year in 2009, but will be out of action until at least the midway point of the season after undergoing hip surgery. In addition, Percy Harvin has been struggling with persistent migraine headaches that have limited his effectiveness. Minnesota has signed veterans Javon Walker and Greg Camarillo to bolster the position, but it may take some time for them to develop the necessary rapport with Favre. Historically, Superbowl champions haven’t always done well trying to defend their title. At one point, betting against the Superbowl champs was a very solid pointspread position though it hasn’t been especially effective in recent years. Three of the last four defending Superbowl champs had pointspread records of .500 or better the following year. The 2008 New York Giants went an impressive 12-5 against the spread. The 2009 Steelers, on the other hand, were a huge money loser for bettors going 5-10-1 against the number. The Vikings are definitely a ‘live dog’ in this spot, however, but there will likely be an added incentive for Brett Favre and company. New Orleans has a reputation for big celebrations, and the start of the 2010 NFL football season is no exception. The city is going to celebrate the new season and their Superbowl win with festivities worth of Mardi Gras. For the first time in NFL history, there will be an actual parade leading up to the regular season kickoff which travel through the French Quarter and downtown and no doubt display all of the ‘understated good taste’ for which the city has become famous. That’ll be followed by a concert from the Dave Matthews Band and Taylor Swift and were that not enough, the Saints will have a ceremony to present their Superbowl championship rings in the Superdome before the game. And then the game will begin, and the Vikings will very likely use the celebration as motivation for a strong effort. The Saints, conversely, will hear right up until kickoff repeated affirmations about how wonderful they are—not exactly the mindset you want a team to have heading into a game against a tough opponent. Minnesota would have been a strong play getting five points in any circumstance, but the motivational spot makes it even better. From an NFL betting standpoint, we look for the Vikings to win outright as +5 point road underdogs in a game that goes OVER the total.

In recent years the NFL has made a tradition of kicking off the regular season with a marquee matchup on Thursday before a full slate of action on Sunday, and this year is no exception. In this year’s regular season opener the Superbowl Champion New Orleans Saints will host Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. The NFL has spared no expense to make this an ‘event’ with concerts, a ring presentation ceremony and even a parade.
