Jets Try To Maintain AFC East Lead Against Bengals
Jets Try To Maintain AFC East Lead Against BengalsThe Cincinnati Bengals are fortunate that most of the mainstream sports media has been distracted by the implosions of the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings. Otherwise the Bengals would be getting more coverage of their profoundly disappointing 2010 season. Cincinnati enters this contest with a 2-8 SU/3-7 ATS record having lost 7 straight games and failing to cover in six of these defeats. For the Jets it's been ‘business as usual'. They've won 7 of 8 and are tied with the New England Patriots atop the AFC East. Current NFL betting odds on this game have the Jets installed as a -8' point home favorite with the total set at 44.

In some ways, the Bengals' 'tank job' this season has been the most embarrassing all around performance by any NFL team. Dallas' collapse was dramatic, but fiery owner Jerry Jones made it clear that the substandard performance was unacceptable. Minnesota had high hopes entering the season, but in retrospect they were clearly unrealistic given Brett Favre's age and physical condition and the depleted Vikings' receiver corps. The Bengals have not only been a disappointment on the field, but no one around the organization appears to really care. Marvin Lewis knows he’s gone after this year. There’s also an absence of ‘character guys’ among the players to provide the leadership that Lewis isn't. Cincinnati enters this game off an embarrassing loss to Buffalo in which the Bengals blew a 28-7 lead.

Despite their success, the Jets are a tough team to figure out. On one hand, they've been fairly consistent on both sides of the ball this year. On the other hand, they've only covered one of their last four games despite a 3-1 SU record-and how do you explain that ridiculous 9-0 loss at Green Bay against a Packers' team with a mediocre at best rushing defense? The Jets may be overvalued somewhat by the wagering public, but their current 4-10 ATS run at home suggests a team that is content with doing just enough to pull out a win.

Of course that may be enough against a Bengals team that might not even care if they win or lose at this point. Cincinnati has been a good investment as an underdog in recent years but they’re also on a 10-22 ATS run against AFC opponents and a 0-6 SU/ATS run against the AFC East. The Jets had no trouble with them last year, winning and covering a pair of games. It’s a matchup between a pair of teams that we’d rather be going against, but given the current state of the Bengals you simply can't make a case for financially backing them. We'll grudgingly lay the points with the only team in this matchup that exerts an effort on a weekly basis and look for the Jets to win and cover in a game that stays UNDER the total.
