LSU comes in off a 19-6 road win over SEC rival Mississippi State while the Mountaineers outscored Maryland 37-31. LSU is filled with great weapons on both sides of the ball. Louisiana State was led on the ground by Spencer Ware (22-107) and Michael Ford (13-50) pacing the rushing attack to four yards per carry. Quarterback Jarrett Lee (21-27/213) did the rest with a generally short ball control air attack with a touchdown and interception. Not impressive but highly effective as the Tigers owned the clock with nearly 38 minutes of possession. What was both impressive and effective was the LSU defense that allowed a scant 193 yards while eliminating any running threat and forcing a pair of turnovers. West Virginia has had three straight games to open 2011 where the offense has thrown up some big numbers. WVU piled up 480 yards but were somewhat one dimensional with less than 100 rushing yards. Fortunately quarterback Geno Smith (36-49/388) was on target and able to throw effectively with Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey and Ivan McCartney all totaling over 100 receiving yards while accounting for a whopping 27 receptions. It wasn’t a perfect performance with three giveaways and an inability to run and eat up the clock giving the Terrapins too many opportunities to stay in the game. The defense gave up too many yards 477 and didn’t stop Maryland in either the pass or run but did intercept three passes and returned one for six in the first quarter. Now for this offense to succeed they will have to put up big numbers against one of the best defenses in the college football game today. It has been said that LSU has many players that will someday play in the NFL. It’s a good old fashioned of offense against defense when these teams take the field this weekend.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are off a very big win against a rival in their last outing, but if they can pull off an upset against top ranked LSU, it will be national news.
