The Clemson Tigers travel to Blacksburg Saturday as Virginia Tech’s host in a highly touted matchup. Both the Tigers and the Hokies are enjoying high rankings and solid 4-0 starts to the season. Clemson comes into the game sporting their highest ranking of No.13 in the Associated Press, whereas Virginia Tech has been steady, and currently sits at No.11 in the Associated Press rankings. Saturday’s winner will benefit greatly from a victory over a high quality opponent which will pay dividends when the BCS comes into play later in the season.
Although the Hokies and Tigers are in separate divisions inside the ACC, the winner will certainly make a declarative statement as the ACC’s best. Clemson is riding the wave of momentum into Blacksburg. The Tigers have defeated ranked opponents in back to back weeks, with Auburn and Florida State. Quarterback Tajh Boyd lead the way for Clemson in a signature win over Florida State last week at home. Boyd threw for over 300 yards for the second consecutive week against FSU, totaling 344 yards and three touchdowns. Boyd’s impressive play of late is very encouraging for Clemson, as he has shown up big when they have needed him most this year. Perhaps even more impressive was the Tigers’ defensive effort against the rush Saturday, holding the Seminoles to just 29 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
Virginia Tech has been going about their business quietly this season, coasting to an easy 4-0 mark, albeit against weak competition. The Hokies most recently beat Marshall last week 30-10. David Wilson once again led the way for the Hokies, piling up 132 rushing yards and a touchdown. Josh Oglesby also joined the party, rushing for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns. Quarterback Logan Thomas threw for 229 yards and an interception.
Virginia Tech loves to run the football every year, but even more so this year with an unproven sophomore quarterback filling the shoes of departed Tyrod Taylor. David Wilson has been shouldering the load of the Hokies offense and will need to come up big Saturday for VaTech to get the win. Two weeks ago, Clemson gave up 237 rushing yards to Auburn, and running back Michael Dyer had 151 of those and two touchdowns.
The Hokies have an impressive defense that will be tough for the Tigers to match up with, but they handled Florida State so anything can happen.
