| College Football Preview: Western Michigan Broncos vs. Connecticut Huskies |
The latest college football betting odds for this game and the entire schedule on week five can be found at online sportsbook, BetPhoenix. Western Michigan let a signature win over a major program slip through their fingers in their loss to Illinois in week four. The Fighting Illini broke a 20-20 tie with a fourth quarter field goal to send WMU to their second defeat of 2011 against Big Ten (Michigan) competition. Western Michigan needed more on the offensive side of the ball with only 341 yards to their credit and a scant 35 rushing yards. After 21 fruitless attempts to establish a ground game the Broncos turned to the right arm of Alex Carder who nearly pulled off the upset with a pair of scoring tosses against a single interception. Seven different receivers caught passes but Jordan White (14-132) was the main reason Western Michigan was alive until the final gun. The Broncos defense can’t be overlooked for their contributions by holding Illinois to 463 yards despite getting pushed around somewhat on the ground. Two turnovers helped the cause but this unit made some stops in key situations. Connecticut and their defense put up enough of a fight over what looks to be an improved Buffalo to grind out a much needed road win. The Huskies still haven’t broken loose offensively after just 293 yards but they did come up with a few big plays. The ground game that was this team’s trademark over the last several years was bogged down and held to only 80 yards although UConn tried to run to the point of being stubborn with 42 forays in to the Bulls front seven. Quarterback Johnny McEntree had one of his best games of the young season with scoring tosses of 4 yards and a game clinching 49 yarder in the fourth quarter. Nick Williams had only two catches but one was the 49 yard TD reception and the other was for 64 yards. It was exceptional production for an air game that has struggled early on. It was still the Connecticut defense that rose up and kept Buffalo out of the end zone and held the Bulls to 6 of 19 on third down and 319 yards overall. Western Michigan lost a game last week they could have easily won. Now they have a chance to make up for that loss with a game against the Huskies.
