College Football Preview: TCU Horned Frogs vs. SMU Mustangs
College Football Preview: TCU Horned Frogs vs. SMU Mustangs

TCU is a media darling and in the past have had an outside chance of playing for a national championship. This year they will need to put big wins against tough teams to get back to that spot. It all starts with SMU this week.

The latest college football betting odds for this game and the entire schedule on week five can be found at online sportsbook, BetPhoenix.

Southern Methodist did exactly what they needed to do in their match up with Memphis in that the Mustangs jumped out to a 28-0 first half lead and erased all doubt of who was winning this game. On the way SMU piled up over 500 yards in generally any way they chose and the preferred method was through the air with quarterback JJ McDermott (28-44.357) who tossed for three scores against one interception. Darius Johnson (19-116) and Der’rikk Thompson (6-104) were the receivers of choice with three touchdowns between them. The ground game produced 162 yards with Zack Line runnng for 136 yards on 20 tries with three trips to the end zone so Southern Methodist had several productive options. It turns out that very little was needed with the Southern Methodist D giving up only 139 yards and surviving four giveaways by their own offense.

Texas Christian had an easy time of it with sub division Portland State with 24 second quarter points leading the way to what most thought would be an uncontested victory. The experts were right on the money as the Horned Frogs rolled up 462 yards with equal contributions on the ground and in the air. The rushing game totaled nearly 250 yards with Waymon James (10-136) averaging more than a first down per touch. Casey Pachall (14-20/214) had a short but productive day with three scoring passes and a pick with Skye Dawson (8-111) and Josh Boyce (4-95) scoring three times between them. A pair of interception returned for scores and an 82 yard kick return were finishing touches in a dominating performance. The Horned Frogs only had the ball for 23+ minutes and explains how fast they were able to score in a game that could have been much worse if so desired.

The Mustangs have scoring with regularity since getting smacked around by Texas A&M in their opener. This will have to continue if they want to have success against the Horned Frogs and the tough defense they bring to the field every week. This game is bigger for SMU as a win could put them on the national stage.
