Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers Play Against the Chicago Bears
Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers Play Against the Chicago Bears

Rookie QB Cam Newton will get a true road test when he takes on the defensive Chicago bears this weekend.

Carolina, as well as rookie phenom QB Cam Newton and new head coach Ron Rivera captured their first win of the 2011 season this past Sunday with a 16-10 triumph over the Jacksonville Jaguars. It wasn't a pretty victory, and Newton came nowhere near his record-setting numbers from his first two games, but a win is a win.

Newton, who set records for most yards passing by a QB in his first two games, as well as smashing all Panther's all-time franchise records, connected on 18 of 34 passes for 158 yards and most importantly, the game-clinching TD pass to TE Greg Olsen with 4:20 remaining.

Defensively, the Panthers started out extremely strong, with DEs Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy terrorizing Jags rookie QB Blaine Gabbert early, even tripping him up in the end zone for a safety on Jacksonville's first possession. The two starting rookie DTs, had their difficulties with Jags RB Maurice Jones-Drew (122 yards), but stiffened up when it mattered. The linebacking corps, missing starters Jon Beason and Thomas Davis (both out for the season0, performed surprisingly well, and while Carolina's secondary still has issues with the deep ball, other than one breakdown against the Jags, held their own.

Chicago had hoped to make a statement this past Sunday, going against the defending Super Bowl champions and arch-rival Green Bay Packers. Instead, old problems re-surfaced, and the Bears fell, 27-17.

Sloppy, inefficient play on the part of QB Jay Cutler handcuffed Chicago's efforts for a major upset, with the Bears signal-caller completing just 21 of 37 attempts for 302 yards and two TDs, but also 2 interceptions. To break Cutler's issues down further, he was just 2 for 8 on attempts of 15 yards or longer, including the two interceptions. Even more damaging was the almost complete absence of a Bears ground game. For the second consecutive week, Chicago ran the ball only 12 times, and against the strong Packers defense, gained only 13 yards. Even more revealing, their longest run from scrimmage was 9 yards on a Cutler scramble. Needless to say, head coach Lovie Smith is desperate for some offensive continuity, whether it's from Cutler, RB Matt Forte or any of several underachieving wide receivers.

Against Carolina, Chicago's defenders are going up against one of the NFL's most dangerous athletes at QB in Cam Newton. His ability to either escape pressure or out-muscle it is about as good as any current QB's in the league. On the other side, some type of offensive balance is essential.

Newton could very easily get a rude awakening when he takes to the field and faces a top-notch defense.
