| The San Francisco 49ers Try and Clip the Wings of the Philadelphia Eagles |
All of the NFL Odds for this game and the entire week four NFL schedule can be found at online sportsbook BetPhoenix. The 49ers scored with just over 3 minutes remaining this past Sunday in Cincinnati to defeat the Bengals 13-8, improving their record to 2-1. San Francisco didn't advance into Bengal territory until nearly halfway through the 3rd quarter, and the fourth-quarter began with the score tied at 3-3. 49ers QB Alex Smith directed the team on their only extended drive of the game, a 10 play, 72 yard venture during which Smith completed 4 of 5 passes for 48 yards, capped off by rookie RB Kendall Hunter's 7-yard run at the 3:59 mark, the only touchdown of the game. Smith connected on 20 of 30 pass attempts for 201 yards, but his successes were rare, and although he's proven to be a competent field general, Smith's position as starter is more a matter of there being no other proven options than his abilities. Defensively, the 49ers continued their league-leading run defense, holding the Bengals to 79 yards on 20 carries, with RB Cedric Benson doing the majority of the work, carrying 17 times for 64 yards. The 49ers haven't surrendered 100 yards plus to a running back in 25 consecutive games. After three games, San Francisco is allowing opposing teams just 62.7 yards per game. LBs Patrick Willis, Navarro Bowman and safety Dashon Goldson all had big games, while Reggie Smith's interception of Bengal QB Andy Dalton's pass at 1:45 sealed the win. Vick had led his team to a 16-14 lead after trailing 14-0 when he suffered a badly bruised right (non-throwing) hand on a hard shot from Giants DE Chris Canty. Vick suffered a concussion in Week Two and his participation in the game versus New York wasn't guaranteed until the day before. Before he was forced out, Vick connected on 16 of 23 passes for 176 yards, as well as rushing for 31 yards on 7 carries. His replacement, Mike Kafka, had his first pass attempt intercepted by Giant's CB Aaron Ross doing little to inspire confidence. Soon afterwards, Giant QB Eli Manning hooked up with RB Ahmad Bradshaw to seal the win. For the afternoon, Manning hit on 16 of 23 attempts for 254 yards and four touchdowns. The Eagles primary weapon was RB LaSean McCoy, who picked up 128 yards on 24 carries, including a touchdown. WR Jeremy Maclin led Philadelphia's receiving, hauling in 5 passes for 69 yards. Defensively, aside from the already-mentioned linebacking situation, they displayed a decent pass rush, sacking Manning 3 times and getting some tough interior play from DTs Cullen Jenkins and Trevor Laws. The LB corps underwent a radical shuffling prior to the game, with all three starters switching positions. The normally shut-down secondary was repeatedly victimized by Eli Manning, allowing him to pick apart the Eagle's coverage almost too easily. This exciting game could end the hopes of Eagles fans or jump start the team on to what could be a super season.
