Still adapting to the loss of future Hall-of-Fame QB Peyton Manning to a probable season-ending neck injury, the Colts looked like they may have turned the corner this past Sunday night, only to fall victim to a pair of Pittsburgh Steelers who've made a career of dashing big dreams, QB Ben Roethlisberger and safety Troy Polamalu. Thanks to a stirring comeback, the Colts rallied to tie the Steelers at 20-apiece only to watch as Big Ben and some clutch defense by Polamalu and LB James Harrison ended Indianapolis' upset bid. PK Shane Suisham's 38-yard field goal with :04 seconds remaining drove the final nail in the Colts' coffin. After losing QB Kerry Collins to an early fourth-quarter concussion, the Colts turned to Curtis Painter, who almost guided the Colts to their first victory of 2011. Instead, the vaunted Steeler "D" more than rose to the occasion when Harrison demolished Painter for a sack, knocking the ball loose where the opportunistic Polamalu scooped it up and scored, breaking a 13-13 tie. The Colts defense performed the best it's shown all season, frequently harassing the normally unflappable Big Ben into three turnovers as well as sacking the Steelers QB three times. They also effectively negated Pittsburgh's ground game, holding them to 67 yards on 27 carries. But when it mattered most, Pittsburgh came through. The Bucs flexed their defensive muscle on Sunday, creating three turnovers and sacking Falcons QB Matt Ryan four times along with holding Atlanta's well-respected ground game to a mere 30 yards on 15 carries. Offensively, QB Josh Freeman scored his first career rushing TD as well as completing 22 of 32 passes for 180 yards. Freeman did suffer two interceptions to the Falcons, but overcame them in leading his team to its first win over the Falcons since 2008. Bucs workhorse RB LaGarrette Blount led the ground game with 81 yards on 24 carries. The defense was perhaps the biggest question mark prior to the season, but after surrendering an average of 156 yards per game through the first two weeks, the Bucs shut down Atlanta's Michael Turner (20 yards, 11 carries), while keeping All-Pro WR Roddy White relatively under wraps. The constant pressure they applied to QB Ryan was the key factor however, exacting some measure of revenge for being victimized regularly in previous meetings with the Falcon's signal-caller. The Colts seemingly have given up on the season without Peyton Manning. They played close to the Pittsburgh Steelers but that will be hard to duplicate.
