| Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week Five: Who to Pick up and Who To Drop |
ADD John Beck, Redskins: Rex Grossman was the reason the Rams were still technically in this game. When Grossman is "on" he plays like a capable starter. However, he's a limited talent and it's beginning to show in the past few games just like it has every season. We wouldn't be surprised if John Beck earns an opportunity if Grossman continues to perform as a 1-TD/2-INT player over the course of the next 2-3 weeks. Remember, Beck made this training camp QB competition very close. Many thought Beck out-performed Grossman. In fact, a wily coach like Mike Shanahan might have decided it would be harder to allow Beck to play through difficult performances with Grossman on the bench unless Grossman already had his chance. Beck has the most upside of any quarterback on this list this week. However, there isn't a signal caller on this list that trumps Ryan Torain, Stevan Ridley, or some of the top, "add" recommendations at receiver from the 2-3 weeks prior to this week's list. Stevan Ridley, Patriots: In case your league has ignored Ridley because none of you felt he would earn enough carries to warrant a roster spot or you're in a league with tight roster space, it's time to make the rookie a priority add. Ridley continues to show a physical running style with a good burst. He's earning the opportunity to split carries with BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Although he's not a consistent bye-week option, Ridley is looking too good for it to remain this way. Green-Ellis hasn't done anything to lose opportunities, but Ridley could take this job the minute Green-Ellis falters in some fashion. We also think you should remember Shane Vereen as the season progresses, but unless you can get Ryan Torain we think Ridley is the next best addition of the week, barring a jaded owner drops a player like Mark Ingram. DROP Knowshon Moreno, Broncos: Moreno's best play of the day was a flea-flicker where he appeared indecisive to a hole before pitching the play back to Kyle Orton who promptly hit Brandon Lloyd on a deep post pattern. The dancing at the edge of the line was unfortunately very realistic. Moreno isn't bad as a third-down back, but he's doing nothing to show that he can run more than 10 yards downfield without losing his footing or getting hurt. Willis McGahee is running well enough to hold off Moreno, so if you have other priority needs or one of this week's RB recommendations are available (excluding Keiland Williams), don't hesitate to drop Moreno. Hines Ward, Steelers: Ward does occasionally get targeted, but he's far and away a distant third to Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown at this time. Ward actually dropped a pass in this game that he's usually known to make when his quarterback is scrambling for his life. Ward's fantasy prospects are a lot like Donald Drivers' in Green Bay: both are still on the field, but their targets are too limited to consider them as more than desperation bye-week options at best. Go ahead and drop Ward if you need players with more consistent targets. These are just a few suggestions and stop by every Monday to get more and make your team better.
