| The Houston Texans Are Shorthanded Against the Oakland Raiders |
Houston pulled off one of the franchise's biggest wins this past Sunday with a 17-10 victory over the defending AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers. The win made the Texans 3-1 on the season, leaving them in a tie with Tennessee atop the AFC South. Houston won the game by utilizing a style that's usually the Steelers' domain, hard-hitting, physical play with a minimum of mistakes. The Texans did more than their share of dealing out punishment, knocking RB Rashard Mendenhall (hamstring), LB James Harrison (eye injury) and DE Aaron Smith (sprained foot) out of the contest. The contest wasn't all positive however, as All-Pro WR Johnson was sidelined with a hamstring injury. His status is, at best, day-to-day. QB Matt Schaub didn't have one of his better outings, but he directed the Texans offense almost flawlessly. For the afternoon, Schaub connected on 14 of 21 attempts for only 138 yards, but a first-quarter Owen Daniels 1-yard TD pass after a lengthy drive set the tone. RB Arian Foster was easily the Texans' offensive star, rushing for 155 yards with a workman-like 30 carries, showing he appears to be fully recovered from a nagging hamstring injury which had limited his work in the early season. Defensively, the Texans consistently made Roethlisberger run for his life, but not before he was sacked 5 times, two of them credited to Mario Williams. They also kept the Steelers passing game under control, limiting Roethlisberger to 206 yards on 16 of 30 pass attempts, as well as an interception by CB Jason Allen. Oakland fell victim to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on Sunday, losing 31-19 on Sunday. The Raiders didn't help their cause, consistently having drives stopped primarily by their own mistakes. One of the most damaging was QB Jason Campbell's end zone interception at the hands of New England safety Patrick Chung just before halftime. The Raiders could have taken the lead, and there was a palpable momentum shift after that. Coming in as the league's top rushing team and claiming the NFL's top individual rusher, RB Darren McFadden, Oakland did manage to rack up 160 yards, led by McFadden's 75 on 14 carries. Still, Oakland racked up 504 total yards of offense, but the timing of their mistakes and poor execution sealed their fate. On defense, the Raiders, as every NFL team learns eventually, Tom Brady and Co. are almost impossible to slow down, much less stop. Limiting Brady to "just" 226 yards passing is normally viewed as a "win" by most defenses, but on this day, when Brady passed Joe Montana on the NFL's all-time TD passes list, 226 yards was more than enough. Now the Raiders can have the chance to pull off an upset by taking down the banged up Houston Texans.
