The New England Patriots and New York Jets rivalry adds another chapter in this series

A big AFC East contest for both teams, the Jets needing a win badly after being manhandled by Baltimore on Sunday night, and the Patriots needing a win to stay tied with Buffalo atop the division standings.

Rex Ryan must have thought he had stepped back in time on Sunday night, as the former Raven's defensive coordinator watched his old team completely dismantle his Jets with hard-hitting defense and big special team plays. The 34-17 shellacking was thorough, and this game will not appear on either teams offensive highlight film, as just one offensive touchdown was put up , while an NFL record five touchdowns were scored on returns of either fumbles, interceptions or kickoffs.

The defense got on the scoreboard on the Jets first play from scrimmage when Jameel McLain rumbled six yards with a fumble caused by S Ed Reed's hit on New York QB Mark Sanchez. The Jets Joe McKnight returned the ensuing kickoff 107 yards, tying the game less than 3 and a half minutes in. Sanchez basically stunk it up, going 11 for 35 for only 119 yards, an embarrassing 3.4 yards per catch average. New York's ground game wasn't any more effective, and for the evening, the Jets accumulated only 150 total yards. RB Shonn Greene's 23 yards on 10 carries led the Jets, while WRs Derrick Mason (a long-time former Raven) and Plaxico Burress combined for 70 yards on 5 receptions.

LB David Harris' second-quarter 35-yard interception return for a TD provided the only other New York touchdown, and the amount of time the Jet defenders had to stay on the field (37:28 for Baltimore, 22:32 for the Jets), took a huge toll on New York's ability to stymie their opponent.

New England bounced back from a defeat in Buffalo the previous week with a dominating 31-19 win over the Raiders in Oakland. QB Tom Brady bounced back nicely from his four interception meltdown against Buffalo by connecting on 16 of 30 passes for 226 yards and two TDs. Brady's second TD moved him past Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana on the career TD passes list. Brady had ample assistance in the game, with WR Wes Welker grabbing 9 passes for 158 yards and a TD, while Chad Ochocinco made his first significant contribution as a Patriot, latching onto 2 balls for 26 yards. On the ground, RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis had 75 yards and a score on 16 carries, while rookie RB Steven Ridley led the Pats with 97 yards on 10 attempts, also scoring a touchdown on a 33-yard run early in the second half.

This is a pivotal game for the AFC East and the winner will have the upper hand in the race for the division.
