| NFL Preview: Atlanta Falcons vs. Detroit Lions |
The Detroit Lions look to recover from a hard fought loss against the Niners as they play host to the Atlanta Falcons. The Atlanta Falcons are in a year of regression, but last week this team proved that they can still take care of business at the Georgia Dome beating the Panthers 31-17. The Falcons collected three Cam Newton interceptions on the afternoon as Michael Turner pounded the football on the other side of the ball for 139 yards on 27 carries. Atlanta has scored 30 or more points in each of its three wins and 14 or less in each of its three losses, so the key to this game figures to be getting the offense untracked against a Lions team that’s fearful upfront. The Falcons defense is porous through the air, so it’s likely they scheme double teams on Calvin Johnson to force other targets to beat them. The Detroit Lions are battered after their most physical game yet as they finally lost a game to the San Francisco 49ers. The Lions struggled immensely to run the football against the Niners gaining only 66 yards on the day but the elusive Jahvid Best continued to make plays in space earning 73 yards on six receptions. Matthew Stafford was also sacked five times in the loss as he passed 50 times for 293 yards, 117 of which went to Calvin Johnson. Detroit figures to have success through the air in this contest if Stafford can stay upright but defending Michael Turner could prove difficult for a Lions rush defense that allows 129.5 yards per game. This game will come down to what teams wants it more as they both play well in the dome and have great matchups at different positions. The winner will take a step forward in a very tough NFC.
