| College Football Preview: Rice vs. Houston |
Rice started off slowly and paid for it falling 38-20 to the Golden Hurricane. The Owls were down 17-0 early and trailed by as many as 21 during the first half. Scoring for Rice was sophomore placekicker Chris Boswell at the start of the second quarter and junior tight end Luke Willson catching a 40-yard pass from senior quarterback Nick Fanuzzi right before intermission. Boswell sank the only points of the third period as in the fourth sophomore running back Turner Petersen ran one in. Unfortunately both scores cut the lead down to 11 as four Owl turnovers helped keep Tulsa on top of the C-USA West. Staying atop the division with the Golden Hurricane were the Cougars with a murderous 63-28 win over 3-5, 2-2 Marshall. It was the second week in a row this season that both the Houston offense and defense have clicked in the same game. The Cougars attacked 3-4, 2-1 East Carolina 56-3 to begin October. Against the Thundering Herd, Houston's senior QB Case Keenum threw two first-quarter touchdown strikes to senior wide receivers Tyron Carrier and Patrick Edwards for a 14-7 Cougars lead. After Marshall tied things up to begin the second, sophomore RB Charles Sims raced in as Keenum threw two more dimes to senior RB Michael Hayes to make it 35-14 Houston at the half. The Herd scored the first and last TD of the second half. Unfortunately for them Keenum threw TD strikes to senior WRs Justin Johnson and E.J. Smith while freshman linebacker Derrick Matthews had a pick six and backup senior QB Cotton Turner threw a TD to freshman RB Daniel Spencer. Rice has lost three of four games by at least 24 points while falling 24-20 at Marshall a few weeks ago. The caliber of opponent to beat the Owls handily have been on par with the Cougars- 4-2, 1-2 Baylor, 6-1, 2-1 Southern Mississippi and No. 24 Texas all protected house comfortably. Houston has won three of four home games routinely only struggling against 3-4, 2-2 UCLA in the opener 38-34. I'm not the biggest fan of the Cougars. I took them to cover against the Bruins and not to cover at 4-3, 1-2 UTEP earlier this year. Both of those forecasts were right. This game could be a lopsided affair, but it gives college football fans a chance to see Houston and see if they are worthy of hype.
