Penn State vs. Illinois
Penn State vs. Illinois

The Penn State Nittany Lions are winning ugly, but they are winning and they look to continue that trend against Illinois.

The top online sportsbook to bet on college football is Bet Phoenix as they cover all of the college football wagering odds and betting options.

Penn State improved to 7-1 this past Saturday with a 34-24 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats. Penn State has been one of the quieter 7-1 teams in the nation, and that is most likely because PSU prefers to do things the old fashioned way with a stout defense and an offense that is just good enough. Penn State is ranked fifth in the nation in scoring defense as the Nittany Lions are allowing just 13.1 points per game this season. Offensively PSU is lead by Mathew McGloin under center, and while McGloin has had his problems at times this year, the Nittany Lions quarterback was solid against the 'Cats this past weekend completing 17/26 for 192 yards and two scores.

Penn State prefers a balanced offensive attack, and that was evident against Northwestern Wildcats as Penn State rushed for 197 yards on the ground against the 'Cats. The PSU defense will be in for a test this weekend as Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase is one of the more dynamic signal callers in all of the Big Ten, and the running game of Illinois can be tough for anyone to stop.

The Illinois Fighting Illini fell to 6-2 on the year as Illinois was upset by Purdue 21-14. Illinois started off the season playing tremendous ball, led by their quarterback Scheelhaase, but the wheels have started to fall off recently, and if Illinois has any shot this weekend against Penn State, the Illini will need to find some of that magic from earlier in the year. Illinois does bring a stout defense with them to Happy Valley as Ron Zook's defense is ranked 15th in the nation in points allowed, giving up just 18.1 per game this season.

Illinois has not only one of the top rushing offenses in the Big Ten, but in the nation as a whole as the Illini are ranked 23rd on the ground gaining 199.3 yards per game. If the Illini can establish a ground attack early, and the defense can make some plays against McGloin the Illini have a shot here, but it will be tough sledding against a solid Penn State squad.

This is a must win for two teams looking to make the bowl committee take notice.
