The Trojans started slow allowing a quick senior quarterback Andrew Luck passing touchdown on Stanford's first possession, but the defense stiffened up as USC struck for 17 straight points to turn a seven-point second-quarter deficit into a 10-point third-quarter lead. Freshman placekicker Andrew Heidari scored the first six points for the Men of Troy who scored twice to open the second half with freshman running back Curtis McNeal's bursting speed. A 10-point lead however would evaporate for the Trojans who called on their junior QB Matt Barkley to bail them out of trouble with a 28-yard strike to freshman wide receiver Marqise Lee. After the Cardinal pulled all even, sophomore cornerback Nickell Robey's pick six put USC back on top 34-27 with 3:08 left. Thinking they had Stanford stopped on third down a late-hit penalty doomed the Trojans, who were only flagged three times the entire game, giving the Cardinal a new set of downs. Stanford took full advantage scoring with 38 seconds left which was almost enough time for Barkley to engineer a game-winning field goal drive. As it was the game went to overtime where the Cardinal flexed their muscle and USC matched Stanford's score with a 15-yard TD between Barkley's arm and sophomore WR Robert Woods' hands. Freshman tight end Randall Telfer caught a 12-yard sling minutes later from Barkely to put the Trojans ahead. However undermanned USC finally showed their lack of depth in the third OT looking defenseless on defense and after Lee was unable to stay inbounds for the score, McNeal fumbled away the Trojans' chances into the end zone. Awaiting USC next week in Boulder are the 1-8, 0-5 Colorado Buffaloes who are still searching for their first win in the Pacific-12 Conference. Colorado's latest loss came at the hands of No. 19 Arizona State 48-14. The Buffaloes continue to digress each weekend if that's possible by only helping their woefully bad offensive and defensive statistics with another nightmarish display in Tempe. USC should roll over Colorado in this game but they could be hungover from the near upset against the Cardinal in overtime.
